Bought a v6 mustang for 5k at 16 years old, drove it until I was 22. College engineering degree....Got a job in the defense industry, lived at home for 6 months to save. Bought the car a few months back, and now happily living on my own.

4 years after college and many hours at the job i decieded to trade my mazdaspeed 3 for a 335. Just thought if i dont get something i always wanted now at 26 i would be tied into other obligations until mid 40s lol. It was 31k for the BMW and the mazda was fully paid off so it took my payments down to nearly 250 a month.

Ill be honest, I started this thread because after I bought my car I was really freakin bankrupt, and I was curious how so many others have managed. This thread has turned into a really cool discussion though. Its cool to read all of your stories! thanks to all who have shared so far.

Despite being 22 now, I have an excellent paying job (VP of Ops/Regulatory Compliance) with one of the largest banks in the world. Beyond that, I've been saving the majority of my paychecks since I first started working, so I have quite a bit saved up, majority of which is invested into high yield funds (7-9% yield, average).
I did luck out at being able to graduate high school at 16 and obtain my Bachelors at 19 (and will be completing my Masters via night classes this winter). It definitely helped me jumpstart my career in corporate banking (which is my dream job; yes, I'm weird). |

Always wanted a convertible and finally pulled the trigger a month ago. Got a pretty good deal on a 2009 Metallic black with red interior and sport/cold weather pkg. I work for an oil company and do pretty good for myself. Use to having car payments so I don't mind. I am not getting any younger either. No Kids or wife is a plus.

Afford?
My wife has a 2007 M Coupe and I have a 2011 335is. We are very passionate about our BMW's and have been big fans of the product line. We have 3 kids, 17, 15 and 10. The oldest has a 1987 325is. To tote everyone around, we do have a Benz ML, but our passion is BMW, by far... We started leasing, but found the mileage restrictions not so fun when all you want to do is drive everywhere. We migrated into standard loans, which, yes, we pay a boatload of payments every month. But for us, it's worth it.

Dad told me to find a good deal on a loaded 3 series for under $30k with low miles. This was May 2011, I just turned 16. The car was going to be his.
Being the 16 year old I was, I didn't care. That meant one thing, stock 335i coupe with sport package. Found some good 335is, with no options. Showed the listings to my dad, he wouldn't consider them. He wanted iDrive, heated seats, the prem package, etc. I eventually found a nicely equipped 2007 335i sedan, but it sold before we got to test drive it. We test drove a different 335i that we didn't like and he said it had more power than I would need. 335i wasn't really an option then. All my weeks of avoiding and nitpicking 328is became futile. Finally, in August 2011 I found the car. 2009 328i Sedan, loaded, with 3,500 miles. It was priced at $28,750(!). We took the 75 mile trip to the middle of nowhere, test drove it, and bought it. A 3500 mile car in the current bodystyle for $15k under sticker. It was practically brand new. Now it's mine. I'm gonna spend some of my savings on tuning it and making it look better. I don't know why my dad bought me a nearly $30k first car, but I love it and I'll be driving it for awhile — I won't have a real job untill my early 30s if my plans work out. Tl;dr my dad bought it. |
