My Turn to ask this Question- A little bit different

Hey everybody, ive got the shakes

Background:
- took my car in for body work, they disconnected the battery (rear bumper replacement)
- after 2 weeks at the shop, get the car back and battery is very low
- i get a transmission failure; i cant shift out of first gear.
- I pull over, turn the car off. Wait, and restart it. Car works fine.
- Replace battery.Never received the transmission warning again.
- last week, i notice a slight rumble in the engine, very minimal

Now:
- My car shakes very noticably when in revese or Drive and im not moving. I also experience jerkiness (car seems to hop) when im in reverse.
- putting the car in neutral seems to alleviate the shaking
- engine seems to be stalling- dips between 500-700 rpm while idle
- no codes are being thrown and no check engine/service soon lights
- there are some clunky shifts, but not all the time.

What do you guys think it is? Think its transmission fluid, spark plugs or coils? Im due for a 90k tune-up soon.

2007 328i coupe. Thank you!

Fresh plugs would prob be where I would start, then u might have some coils on the way out so id prob replace those too. Not sure about the clunk in the tranny. Maybe get someone to reset the adaptations on it and try again. The hopping and jerking in reverse if definitely strange too

the jerkiness in reverse is similar to when youre about to stall on a manual transmission- it keeps hopping/jerking. Does it in drive too but not as drastically.

I took it to a mechanic (not a bmw tech) and he feels that it could be the solenoids- not spark plugs or coils. I call up BMW and they want $205 just to LOOK at my car.

try cleaning out your vanos solenoids first. theres a DIY on here for it, not a hard job.

Thanks, I'll look into that.

Started my car again (cold start). Idles fine, no engine funkiness. I put it in drive and there were slight vibrations. Does that support transmission or engine problems?

Yep, start by cleaning the Vanos solenoids (and most swap them around), then while you are in there, take the engine cover off and inspect the eccentric shaft sensor plug for any traces of oil (this is a well known issue and can cause a stumbling/rough idle).

Hope you get it sorted out!

No codes? Maybe it's a PCV leak. When your car is running smooth next time try opening the oil filler cap slightly. That will make the car run rough. If it behaves exactly the same way as when you put it in reverse that could be your problem.

Like others have said, clean solenoids, check shaft sensor (both of these are not difficult. at least checking the sensor and not replacing it ). And lastly, clean your maf sensor. My car had violent shakes and even stalled out from a dirty MAF.

agentphish- thanks for the PM, i will check the milpitas recommendation after checking the solenoids and shaft sensors and PCV test.

I cleaned the MAF despite it not being physically dirty and that didnt do much.

Thanks for the suggestions, gentleman

Sounds like your coil packs are going out, I had the same symptoms and I changed out two of my bad coils last month. My car runs fine now, I plan on replacing the rest of my coils when I can.
