which brand of pads/rotors to buy?
Okay everyone needing to do my rear brakes very soon...trying to figure out which pad type I want.
I've looked on Pelican Parts and BAV Auto and am seeing BMW pads ($92), Jurid ($54), Textar ($46) and Pagid ($59). Pelican has the Textar rated as "best", which I do find a little odd since they are the lowest in price. I have used Pagid pads in the past and have been fairly satisfied. Can anyone give feedback regarding these brands of pads before I place my order? Also, with regards to the rotors...it looks like they have Zimmerman brand for $62 each and Brembo for $82 each. I did put Brembo on my e36 M3 in the past and was happy with them. Does anyone have experience with the Zimmerman brand? thanks in advance! |

Cool Carbon pads + OE rotors have been a nice combo for me. The car sees DD in the city, and the squeaking is kept to a relative minimum once some heat gets into the pads. I don’t think E9X shares the pads from E8X, but our OE pads are stupid dusty. Within 100 miles of a cleaning, your wheels are completely covered in brake dust. Cool Carbons have been much better on that front. IMO BMW blanks do just fine for street use.

Then Cool Carbon is right in your wheel house. SO much better in terms of dust.

Textar is OEM on the rear. Pagid and Textar are both TMD friction so if you buy Pagid do not be suprised if you get the Textar version. If you worried about dust Textar make a ceramic as well.

I've been using StopTech slotted rotors and performance street pads for years. Very good performance, reduced brake dust, and I use it even on track. Highly recommended. Best of all, very affordable on Amazon.

On my last car (2006 e90 330i), I did the Zimmerman zinc coated rotors with cool carbon pads, and sensors (you do need), it was all under $600. I was happy with that set up, but not sure how much less dust there was.

likely because the thickness of the rotors has worn down such as that they can not dissipate enough heat to operate safely anymore.

The newer oem pad compound dusts very little compared to the older one. Not sure when they switched but the reduction in dust is night and day better. Slightly less initial bite but overall a decent pad for street. My comparison is 07 vs 11. They are worth a look. Www.getbmwparts.com

I've been using Cool Carbons on my 06 e90xi since 2008. At the moment I have Gas-slotted Tuner Motorsport rotors. I have to say that the price for the performance is great. I don't track my car but as a daily driver and the occasional twists, it's perfect. You get a pretty good initial bite and you can literally feel the the slowing of your car through the brake pedal and hear it too (it's not a squeak or anything nasty, it actually a really cool sound I can't describe). Not sure if you'd like that but, I personally love it.

Akebono euro pads are worth looking into. I'm running them on the front of my car right now and will be putting the same on the rear when replacement time comes. I have literally NO dust from those pads, but like other aftermarket pads, they don't quite have as strong of an initial bite as the OEM pads. After a month of driving I got used to it and they still stop great

Okay, after talking with the rep from Pelican Parts I ended up going with the Akebono Euro pads and the Zimmerman rotors.
I got those as well as a sensor wire and 2 rotor set screws for $229 including shipping. The sales rep seemed very knowledgeable. Will definitely be ordering from Pelican again! |
