I'm almost due for an oil change, according to the electronic dipstick, and I checked under the hood and noticed some oil residue on the filter. Is it possible that it's just the filter that is overdue for replacing or is it something more serious?

looks like the o ring. undo and re-torque cap correctly or replace o ring.

it could also be the fan blowing a leak up and around there from the oil filter housing gasket (common leak area).

its the o-ring I had the same problem though it was the housing gasket but haven't seen the oil come down the filter again, mine looked just like yours
