Do you believe in exhausts on an automatic?

Title explains it all. Do you believe an exhaust belongs on a manual? Can an automatic pull it off? Low grumble? Obnoxious roar? Does it have to be a fast car? Can a slower small sized engine car pull it off?

I am a bit puzzled by your question........auto or not the exhaust is exhaust. One can hear it in both types of tranny. Let me guess you must be drunk........lol

For god sake man the silenced one or the one that goes vroom vroom do not discriminate between auto or manual when they make sound.

I don't think the exhaust believes in all of us after looking at the title of this thread

In my eyes, I've always assumed a louder car is typically manual. Automatics tend to be the wussies I hear exhausts don't sounds as good on automatics, like they have a drone.

They sound like wussies

Word of advice my friend stay away from all kind of Vroom Vroom thoughts when you had too much to drink............other wise a Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 will hunt you down in your dreams with its semi-auto or M3 DCT vroom vroom.

Although exhausts do sound cooler on manuals, they don't sound bad on automatics.

I took my mufflers of my auto 328 and it sounded great.

+1
I used to think that a mean sounding exhaust should only belong to manual cars till I did a muffler delete on my E92 328 AT and it changed my perspective.

Look at the GTR it doesn't come in MT but sounds mean as hell.

Well, since the OP asked.... I generally find that performance sounding exhausts sound stupid on automatics. The slushier it is, the more stupid it sounds. Some of the recent BMW boxes, especially in DS or with a TCU reflash for high pressure shifts should sound OK.

People can get loud exhausts because (among other reasons) they either like to draw attention to themselves, feel peer pressure to mod that part of their car along with all the rest, or appreciate the sensory experience (one-ness with the machine) of all aspects of driving including the sound track, being able to hear accurately for rev-matched downshifts etc... I find most autos with aftermarket exhausts fit into the first two categories are rarely the third or they would have bought an MT in the first place.

This isn't a bash on those with ATs in general. They have their place and the newest ones are less annoying than ever.

Ummm, YES. Four come to mind:

BMW Performance exhaust
Dinan
Vanguard
Turner motorsport

Oh, the best is Berk Technologies cat-back on a 135. Any of these sound great on an automatic.

Yup, I think every car, regardless of transmission type should have an exhaust. That is, unless it's an electric since they don't need to exhaust anything.

Yes Automatic can do it and Yes a smaller sized engine car can pull it off. My A4 B6 was a 1.8T 4 banger and I always got compliments on the exhaust I had on that car. People thought it was amazing that a 1.8 could sound like that.

Just got a PE installed on my manual 328i. Overall I'm very happy with it, but for me, I actually might have preferred it on an automatic. Why? Because every time I pull off the pedal it backfires and goes pop, pop, pop. Many people think that sounds great, well I don't!

I am not crazy about the drone I get. I do love the sensory experience that is created with the exhaust. I do not do it for anyone else but me. Then there is the sound during the higher speed shift in ds and m, they sound simply amazing. When I am shifting in a tunnel or under an overpass it sounds great. So the end question you must ask yourself is, "Do the benefits of the better overall sound outweigh the drone?".
