"building" an Alpine White momentum car
To meet my long term goal of "learning how to drive", I've upgraded cars. From a drive-shaft-snaping-torque-beast, to a momentum car.
I picked up the car for 1000 in Feb. Just days after buying, I autocrossed it with the SCCA. In the tech line, the guy asked me if it was a diesel. (When I bought it, the owner said it needed a valve job. And it fouled plug #4.) The following weekend, I autox'd it with the sdbmwcca. 325racer and his mom put a raping on it. The car had overheating issues and yes it did foul a plug. So, after 2 semi-successful auto crosses, I decided to take the head off. The goal was to have the car big-track ready for a PCA DE in March. Or, a SpeedVentures day in April. So, head comes off. There's something kinda wrong. Time for a new plan. All the while, I'm telling myself, "I spent 1k on the car. I don't want to put more than 1k into it." Picked up a motor from a vert with an auto tranny for 300. Hoses, gaskets, hardware, etc for around 200ish. After recruiting some CCA homies, we got the motor in. To celebrate the car being running for a whole week, I decided to drive it 120 miles to LA. Beat it up for 20 very angy autox miles. Then drive it home. Besides a wheel trying to fall off on the freeway on the way home... its been solid. the car beat lots of more-capable cars https://axwaresystems.com/axorm/file...9-6-09_fin.htm something wrong with piston #4 motor is out torque converter still on the "new motor" "new" motor going in it drove up to LA this past weekend the girlies dig the white car |

Very nice upgrade !!! Can't wait to see it at Buttonwillow... Do you think your brakes will be up to the task??
Dude I can't go autocrossing with you anymore... I would have to kill myself if you beat me in a $1500 car !! |

After the womens tech session at the local dealer, I'll change rotors and pads. The current front brakes are gone. The thing that worries me is the cooling system. Every thing should work out for BW. The only reason its in "D" is because it has springs and a chip. Not like an N54 chip making 100 extra foot/lbs. Maybe 5 more powers. There was still a fair amount of time I left on the table. The e30 is an awesome car. You're free to co-drive with me when I get the cooling system sorted. Hopefully the 30 will make me faster when I get in the e90. |

I was looking at the instructor list last night. I don't think i have any pull with the chapter. But if I did, it's between you, Lee, and about three others for who I want as instructor. I feel sorry for my instuctor, who ever it is. I don't have the A/C working yet. |

Very nice! after driving the porcubimmer ('87 325e) for a few hours at the Lemons race last month, I have a new fondness for the E30. For as little as was done to that car, it made for a pretty amazing racecar. we beat on it for almost 14 hours over those two days, and didn't have any problems with cooling or brakes. I think we were using axxis ultimate pads, not even a race compound.
aside from having some body roll that took a few laps to get used to, the car was very well balanced, and a whole lot of fun. having a momentum car is definitely a great way to learn. I even remember tracking my civic when it had the stock 85hp dx motor at streets of willow, and having fun chasing down the much more powerful cars in the turns |

The set of runs before Neil drifted my car, I chauffeured 3 instructors around a lap. That was kinda stressful. And, surpise, the car handled differently when full of yelling buddies. |

You might want to find someplace else to park. That's usually where the instructors park. You don't wanna make them angry by having to walk to far to their stuff. And that area on the other side is going to be the Cold Grid for the race group.

If you guys have a big group going, you're much better off all pitching in and renting a garage ($150 for the weekend) and park your car around the garage, and use the garage for any mechanical repairs you may need or just a place to hang out and rest outside of the sun.

That area always has plenty of space. Everyone tends to pick the other side of the tower.
I'm in to split a garage if a few others want to.

The car absolutely kicked ass.... before I broke it. Motor mount lead to a cut coolant hose.
I was amazed... the guy that doesn't know how to change a wheel told me "why the F didn't you change the motor mounts you cheap bastard. Even I know that." |

and... it's fixed. Not as hard as I thought it would be.
both motor mounts and both tranny mounts were in two pieces. I was hoping the autocross of a few weeks ago would have caused this failure. Instead, this $30 collection of parts cost me (3/8 * $450) + $70. I missed 3 of 8 sessions. The buttonwillow school was pricey. And, the rental car for sunday wasn't free. Not to mention the rental didn't even last the day. |

hahahahahaha, you guys rock.... The white beast looked great out there. I wish I could have had a ride along. Interesting weekend. If it makes you feel better I repaired that plastic piece underneath with epoxy. Ghetto fix FTW.
