Leaving car parked up long-term

Any tips please?

Long term means 2-8 weeks in my case

Nothing. I've left mine for three months without doing anything special. A lay-up for much longer and you'd might want to consider over-inflating the tyres and using a battery conditioner, but 2 -8 weeks is nowt.

My girlfriend's car usually stands for 4-6 weeks at a time.

We always leave the handbrake off and leave the car in gear.

We always try and park the car away from any trees as we once did this and there was a slimey layer over the bonnet which took some time to remove..

Alternatively, a nice heated garage...

As per Xenon. I bought one of these for the Porsche as the battery was fairly small. It has a condition monitor and you can leave it connected as long as you want.
