Nikos your engine sounds normal.
My engine was always tappety when you open the bonnet. The exhaust note tells you how smooth the engine is running. Mine sounded like that when it ran ok. When it became bad you could see the engine out of balance with the vibration. If you opened any door/bonnet you could see how bad the poor idling was.

OK...I have no issues with idle or missfiring or anything like that...which is ok.
My only worry is that my dealer will check valve clearances at 50.000km. He said that there is no point to do it earlier. Do you think I should push him as early as 25.000km? I now have around 22K.

If it were my own car I would insist on it being done earlier as its a lot cheaper than an engine rebuild.
As my car was a co car leased I always had to push for things to be done. I'm sure the stealer/lease co would have not bothered at times.

I thought someone on here would end up with my car. As you haven't posted much I can't send you a PM. I defo would like to catch up with you. For sheer curiosity I did try to get to the auction to see who buys it and how much it went for. But it was under the hammer sometime before I got there. I can defo tell you what you need to know. Just need to know how I can get in touch with you.

320SI intermittent starting
hi all,
I have a 56 plate 320si and it runs real rough on idle, dealer said a software upgrade will cure it but this has been done and failed miserably. Then they said the timing would have to be adjusted, this also has not worked. Any suggestions? I dont think the valve clearances have been checked, is it true this must be done every other oil change? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |

Hi, i am a BMW technician who owns an Si. We had one this week for rough idle from cold. The software update worked on this car. Mine had this problem at 14k, and had the engine replaced due to it. Been absolutely fine since.

Analysis Done and Engine out !!
As you can see from the previous posts that I've managed to get ShereKhan's car and had a few ideas in mind....
-Drop an M5 V10 Engine in it -Fix it and enhance the engine... I went for the second option... but had to do analysis on the problem first and it is a bit surprising... note that the engine has done around 40K... We found that the engine aluminum liners are cracked on all cylinders and have broken off in cyl 3.. and also that there is a small oil leak around the back crack oil seal (under the fly wheel) but that is irrelevant. This is quite interesting on a BMW which has done 45k!! |

The number of engine replacements that are going on seem to indicate similar issues with rough idling, loss of compression, etc...
Seems like poor design and a wrong decision to put aluminum liners instead of cast iron... Will post a few pictures shortly... |

As you can all see there a multiple vertical cracks in each cylinder liner !!!
Still not sure why BMW used Aluminum liners in the first place?? |

Why are the pistons so dirty?
Is it because of poor petrol quality? Question to the 320si mechanic above. Yesterday I gave my car to friend to drive it...and while on 5th, reving he accidentally went to put 4th instead of 6th, but he didn't do it fast...but decluched really slow...so it revved up to 7.500 and just before it went to 8 he put it in 6th. Do you think my engine is damaged? I don't have any issues now, at all...but you think it's damaged?

BMW have rev limiters but obviously they are useless in this situation (mechanical over rev) so be careful next time... Forget it.. all is still ok |

I think you should put LCi headlights and blacklines at rear.

I did wonder the same thing though, I think it may be because the car was misfiring this may have caused the black staining. The oil was changed not long before the car was scrapped.

Personally think that it is from poor combustion due to the cylinder leaks, it is heavier on cyl 3 which is the worst... also visible on the head..
The engine liners have now been removed and new high performance (NOT ALUMINUM) liners and being made to order !!! We have also stripped the head and checking it.... More picture to come |
