Your valve guide seals are shot... It's only going to get worse. I had the same problem happen to one of my previous cars. It went from smoke every 20 cold starts or so to smoke every cold start, and burning a quart every 300 miles...

If you can, i'd return that car to the place where I bought it from in a hurry and shop for another car...

Have you been able to get someone else to smell and recognize the contents of the smoke? I agree with what was posted above, even if it only happens once out of every 25 starts, do not consider it minor. Ounce of prevention, pound of cure, etc...

Ok I will look into returning the car if I can its been a while since I got it so I'll see how that goes. I'm in the Kitchner-Waterloo area right now. (Ya I drove the car 1,800 kms in its current condition.) Anybody know a good shop or person I could bring the car to?

I'll be going into the dealer in a few hours to discuss the problem. My car used about 1/4 of a liter of oil over 7,000 kms, is that normal or excessive? If it is too much I wanna be able to tell the dealer that.

I use about a full quart in about 16000km.

These cars burn that much.
A quart between every oil change is normal for me.
This is what I have also seen being normal from other e90post members.

After your visit to the dealer...
Take a picture of their report and post it.

definitely oil on start but these cars have white smoke for warmup period. Then it goes away. That blue smoke is oil at the beginning.

They only put four quarts in bc most honda accords and civic take 4 qts. Dumbasses.

well I brought the car to the BMW dealer yesterday finally. And this is their diagnosis of my car. So I dropped the paper off at the dealer that I got the car from and they will decide if they rather fix the car for me or get me a different car of the same value.

Looks like the picture didn't work. Well the diagnosis said that the bank 2 turbo needed replaced. The total cost was about $3,800 to change it.

I thought you returned the car.
Turbo's are the most expensive work on this car.... At least that's what I think.

PS: ask around for an independent shop.... Get a second opinion.
You don't want to spend this amount, only to find out it wasn't the turbos.

I was going to return it but the dealer figured if they take the car back they would fix it anyway to sell it again so they may as well fix it for me. So if the dealer won't pay for the turbo then they will get me a different car.

Yup about a month and a half ago. But I've put on 10k kilometers on it already.
The brakes are likely from me driving like a maniac and the tire I had picked up a screw in it and I changed oil since I got the car but didn't reset the light.

Saw your post on the timing chain sorry about that bud.

Do you think your smoky exhaust was related to the bank 2 turbo?

I would like to think so. The dealer I bought it from doesn't think so. But they are a Honda dealer so........

That's a tough one to diagnose. Bad valve seals? Blown head gasket? Bad turbo? I would think if the turbo was bad it wouldn't smoke only on start up. I'm sure there are plenty of guys in here that experienced it (search the forum). I would expect burning oil for bad valve guides (blue smoke). Did you check your coolant level to see if you are losing coolant?

Well it's too late for diagnosis now. The timing chain failed and I'm getting a new engine.
