Service Indicator: Sunroof Problem

What is the deal everyone?!?!

Just last night while I was leaving NYC from a good night of drinking and dancing I got a message from my Service Indicator stating that there is a malfunction with my sunroof. The sunroof was working fine while I was driving into the city. I closed all the windows and sunroof and left the car sitting there for a good 5 to 6 hours before I got the message.

I was wondering what might be the cause of this and it there's something that I can do to fix this other then taking it to the dealership for service.

I just find it really strange that it was working fine and all of sudden it's just not working anymore. I can only tilt the sunroof but I can't open it.

THANKS!!!

press and hold the sunroof button in the "lift" position (tilt position)

The sunroof will open upwards and stop

Keep holding the button in
After around 20 seconds the roof will lift another 1/2"

Keep the button pressed in and after a few seconds the roof will start to open, then close

Wait till it is finished moving, then release the button

This will reset the sunroof and all should be well now

If this doesnt work it needs to go in to the dealer

I had a similar issue. Mine said "anti-trap" function. My tilt function didnt even work. I had to push the button forward (close function) to make it tilt up...weird. Took it to the dealership and they said my sunroof was not "initialized"- whatever that means.

IT WORKED!!!

My sunroof is now working after I followed the steps. The only thing you'll need to remember is that your BMW needs to have the engine running in order for the reset steps to work. I tried the steps with the car off (but the key was in the ignition and all electronics were on) but nothing happened.

Thanks E90Fleet!

I had the anti-trap error a while back (car was around 3 months old then). Took it to the dealership and they fixed it.

The engine has to be running for the sunroof to work. The only exception I've found is when you lock the car with the key in the driver's door in which case the engine shouldn't be running.
