Looking for a scanner that can read and clear codes for my 09 E92. Would prefer the lowest price but I'd be willing to go as high as $100ish. Looking for Manufacturer specific codes as well. Anyone recommend one for me? Don't know much about OBD scanners so if this request is unrealistic please let me know.

If you buy the INPA cable from ebay for about $80, you can use your laptop to read the OBD codes as well as code the car to your preference (turn off seatbelt chime, display digital speedometer, roll up all windows from keyfob, etc.)

they have links to find cables for around $8.
worked for me, scan and reset dme codes, reset adaptations, register battery
can't read non-dme

OP will need a d-can cable. I have never seen one for less than $23.

I just picked up a spare on eBay for $10.99 + $9.99 shipping.
It looks exactly like the one I bought from one-stop electronics, but I guess only time will tell if it works like it too. Should be here in 5-15 days.

Best I've heard of. I've seen them listed for 19.99 + 9.99 s&h, I include shipping in total cost when I compare them.

That is a VAG-KKL cable to be used with Ross Tech software for volkswagens. It can also be used with some other vehicles. I read the discussion, anybody who got this to work with a BMW had to do a fair amount of soldering to modify it and even then it will still only be compatible with BMWs manufactured before 03/07. That is when BMW made the switch from k-can to d-can protocol and gave different functions to pins 7 and 8 on the OBD connector. OPs car is model year 09 so he will need to purchase a d-can cable.

So basically I have no laptop right now and need something all in one that can read manufacturer specific codes. Don't know what INPA or DIS is though, like I said I don't know a lot about scanners I just want a way to read codes, figure out what's going on with my car, and clear the code if I can fix the problem myself. Any help for a portable one?

I am new here. Just picked up a 2009 BMW 328i and I am looking for a diagnostic cable or OBD scanner for BMW.

I'm a little confused on which cable can do the job. I think I need a K+DCAN cable but looking through eBay it says it is for E90 up to 2008 (but my car is 2009) so I am not sure what is the difference. Can anyone give me some pointers on which cable I would need?

In terms of software, I see INPA and DIS. What software will I need and what does each one do? And where to get them?

See my sig. By the way I tried the cable and couldn't get it to work so I sold it to someone on this forum. I've been using the peake tool since 2000 and it never let me down.
