just get oem fluid, its like $35 online. I changed mine at 50K and it was black. new fluid is golden yellow; a little lighter than motor oil. The change itself is a pain in the ass though because the space is so small for the filler hole. Follow the DIYs on the forum and you should be alright

I'm a believer in preventative maintenance. Change your fluids proactively.

I too changed my xfer case fluid. I had 60k and it was indeed black. If you're going to do it, use OEM. The price of the fluid sucks but I want to keep this car just about forever. My last car, a 2001 330xi that now belongs to my brother, has 167k on the original xfer case and fluid. So does changing it make a difference? Idk...but I'd rather be safe.
