Sell 335i & Get '08-'10 M5?

Been toying with the idea of why dump so much money into my '07 base model when I could just buy a stock LCI E60 M5 with 500HP and leave it stock I need to do some research on the M5. Ins/outs, issues etc. But they are upper 30's CPO.

Ha, something I always consider. Try for an '08 instead of an '07. Haven't heard of too many issues other than they are a bit more expensive to maintain. I have heard of some horror stories in regards to maintenance for the '06 models but not for the '07s. GL!

Great Car! I would be most concerned about maintenance, insurance and fuel costs.

Dont buy 06-07. Go for 08-10 lci like you said.

Fuel is awful (9-11mpg in city)
V10 is a beast
507hp is unreal and its quick.

Have a 10' m5 with 51k and smg.

Launch control with s6 <3

I drove an e60 M5 once, and it was nothing short of AWESOME! The way it climbs through the revs reminds me of a crotch rocket.

MPG's is not an issue. I've driven my 335i 9.5k in 3yrs. This is my weekend car. I have a primary; '03 530i 5spd manual M sport Saloon. Bone stock, been fixing it up. Love that car for a DD. 30mpg hwy, 27 around town, good visibility out of it (belt line) love the E39 And it's super simple to work on and plenty of room under the hood. But for a toy car, I keep dumping $$ into a base model 335i. Why. Doesn't even have blue tooth, garage door opener, auto dim mirror, oil cooler etc. At least if I'm tooling around in a M5 it's insured. All my mods to my 335i are un-insured. I like the E90 M3, but jeezus is the M3 so expensive!!!

I don't think this is what you mean by "crotch rocket," but I'm asking to be sure. Translated, would your sentence read: ...reminds me of an ejaculating penis?

Last gen LCI M5's are just pure sex. If someone just gave me money for the latest M5, I would just buy an '10 instead and keep the rest of the cash.

Do it OP. Do...it...

i actually considered this before ordering my current car.

most people would think it's a regular five series until you pop the hood for them, which i thought was cool... and it sounds amazing.

but the thought of something going wrong with that v10 was just too scary

^ I'm scared of all the hoses, pipinging etc we have in our 335i's. It's a GD mess under there and turbos and long life do not go together from what I've read. So I think that issue a wash. V10 N/a vs I6 with two BLOWERS. N/A is usually more reliable. Less parts too. If I can find the color combo, miles and 3 pedals for upper 30's I'll do it.

TY. I was hoping for sure you didn't mean what I thought the term meant. I appreciate the clarification.

Keeping an S85 in good running order is not cheap. Absolutely no way it’s cheaper than an N54. And if the SMG takes a dump, prepare to get reamed. What an incredible machine though….But if you think it’s going to be similar to a 335i to maintain, you’re in for a rude awakening. I only know one person with an E60 M5, but it’s a pretty serious money pit. FI 6s can be cranky, but F1 derived V10s are not exactly what I’d call “reliable”.

Well, between the two cars, I don't see too much difference other than that it'll be cheaper to keep your current car than it will to buy the M5, regardless of how many repairs you have to make. Of course, if you really think you'll be spending something like $30K or more in repairs over the next four years or so, perhaps the M5 is the way to go. I offer that because your stated basis for having the quandary is your concern about spending money to repair/maintain your 3er.

The M5 will have more power and a bit more interior space to be sure. It'll cost more to maintain and repair and it'll use more gas. Also, I wouldn't say they are perceived as better looking than the the E9x cars, but they look fine if the owner likes the look.

If I didn't have a very specific reason why I'd need to get the M5, and assuming I already own a 335i, I would just keep my 3er and save my money to buy something nicer and newer when the 3er really isn't worth keeping any longer. As I don't ever any more go to the track to drive, the only reason for my to get an E60-class M5 would be if I felt it'd be a collectible car someday and I was willing to keep it for a very long time.

Now, if you were asking about swapping for a 1M, I'd say go for it. That car will clearly have long term value and is a more special car than the M5.

I completely forgot that my coworker's friend had an E60 M5 and the engine went kaput right after 50k. He was furious that the dealership wouldn't take care of it so he filed a complaint to BMWNA. I shit you not, BMWNA offered to take back the car at its current value and now he has a brand new F10 M5. Oh, after having an F12 M6 for a month while his M5 was out of commission. He must of been a VIC or something!

I need to get brushed up on the maintenance that car needs and what problems the engine has. It's a seroius idea at this point.

good luck, though!

One of the best sounding cars with an exhaust, hope you have some deep pockets tho, that car would make me to nervous between the motor, the smg, & the infamous e60 electrical issues.
