Question that's been on my mind

Good morning folks

The question that's been on my mind is " If I take my car for maintenance outside BMW dealers... Will I lose my 3 year warranty?".

When buying the car it seemed like such a good idea of having 3 year warranty but now I see why most people hate it... So many limitations plus they charge you an arm and a leg for silly services

1) When would you say it's time to get the car serviced elsewhere ?( as in after there years or should I just do it now)

2) let's say I got work done elsewhere, does that mean they wouldn't touch it all
Warranty wise ?

I don't know guys but to me it just seems such a trap, they bum rape you with extortionate prices .... Mate of mine said he got
Charged £400+ for brake pad change !?

I know my self I got my pants pulled for a oil change at £280

So bottom line ... Is the BMW service stamps worth the extra money ? Or is it smart to take it to a well know independent garage e.g. BMW specialist

As far as I know you can get it serviced at another garage, or even do it yourself as long as they use genuine parts.

I would also much prefer to take it to a specialist rather than a dealer and not just because of the price.

I suppose the best way to find out is to ask the dealer and hope they don't lie to you (if you can take it elsewhere).

Have you seen the mechanics at main dealers?

Most of them have hardly started puberty!

The best service for a car is when you do it yourself!
Obviously the negative is resale as everyone believes main dealer is the holy grail

When you buy the car, you can buy a service package for peanuts. It is something like £500 for 5 years worth of servicing. Plus it is Europe-wide, so I've had my car serviced in Germany on the package.

+ long term intervals and "lifetime" fluid = £££ for BMW

You don't need to use genuine parts. You Do need to use OEM specification parts though.

£280 for a service in a 320D seems excessive.

Check out the main dealer discount site and haggle with your local dealer. You should then see respectable prices.

The independent BMW specialists in my area aren't worth using. Their prices aren't that much cheaper than BMW and the difference in cost isn't worth it come resale time.

A huge amount of people want to see full BMW history. You don't see that many newer cars without it. What you save now on servicing will likely be lost when you come to sell.

Also things like pads and discs have nothing to do with servicing or warranty. Get them done anywhere.

As above, the OP says he paid £280 for an oil change but if must of had more than that done for sure.

Oil change alone at my dealer is £162 all in.

Dealer service history does have a bearing when you come to sell. I for one wouldn't buy a prestige car without it. It also says a lot about the previous owner.

Maybe in say the first 5 years it makes a difference

But my 07 320d i don't think it would matter a monkeys

What i plan to do with mine is do the major services myself using genuine parts.

Then every 2 years get BMW to do the interim oil change only (@ £160 odd quid)

That way it will still get a main dealer stamp in the service book.

Along with the other receipts

My local bmw garage ( cooper chelmsford) wanted £140+vat just for a brake fluid change which i thought was a bit of a joke.
My car is an 08 and the previous owner had the last service done by a bmw specialist so i would probably take mine to one now.

If it was under 5 years old i would keep taking it to bmw

Makes me laugh how brakes and tyres can be any old rubbish from anywhere, the 2 things that keep you on the road, but an air filter must be done at bmw to keep the value of the resale of the car

Ive owner many a bmw and have receny sold a 2010 1 series convertible back to bmw without them even seeing it and a 2009 330 msport that the buyer never even cared about the service book at all

It is easy to look at tyres and brakes to judge the condition. If they aren't good that tells you something about the rest of the car.

That said you can easily change brakes and tyres.

People assume that the BMW stamp in the book means the car has been looked after. You want to know the oil and servicable parts have been replaced and checks done to detect faults.

If the car was run on old oil it will do damage to the engine. Something you can't detect by just looking.
