I had a leak coming from under the car (2007 335i, 62000 miles, auto) around front/middle but definitely not from under the engine. The leak started back in September, but I hadn't taken it to get fixed until now; mainly because the car is not my daily driver. So, I brought it in to a shop, got it on a lift, and they determined it was a transmission leak coming from a bad seal. It looks like there is an electrical quick disconnect for the transmission that plugs into some sort of threaded plug. The threaded plug has 2 o-rings on it that prevent transmission fluid from leaking out. It was these 2 o-rings that were bad. The mechanic said I had lost 2 liters of transmission fluid over the 6 month period. Thought I would document this in case any else is having a similar problem. My 3rd party warranty company denied the repair, which was to be expected. The mechanic charged me $200 to replace the threaded plug, with 2 orings, fluid, and labor. Pics below:

Well, the first indy shop I went to wanted $400. He's my guy for all my cars; he works on BMW's but im not sure if he has any certification. Then I went back to the small used-car lot I bought the car from. They have their own mechanics their and they hooked me up. I'm not sure if they have any special BMW certification either, but they will work on BMWs. I bought the car back in July at 55000 miles from a small used car lot. So, its a not CPO.

Your mechatronics sealing sleeve/transmission pan gasket are leaking. This a very common issue. E90 owners will see this alot more as cars start to age espcially in the 06-07 range.

Dude, I think the same exact thing has just happened to me. I found a decent amount of fluid (which was not oil) under the middle of the car. I haven't done anything to the car (lately), so I'm a little unsure. The other part that confused me was that I always see transmission fluid as reddish in color. This was light brown like new oil, but thinner. Have an appt with BMW on Monday...so we'll see.

Is there a particular reason why the orings would go bad? Would it help if we change the fluid sooner?

Also, do you park the car mainly outdoors or indoors usually? Leaking transmission is my worst nightmare.. I had to let go one of my cars a in the past because of this (it was more expensive to fix the transmission than to replace that car).

I have the same issue, I need to go get mine fixed but I still have not found a BMW shop that I like yet and I just bought the car.

BMW is really bad with their gaskets and they leak all the time. If you ever owned a bmw you would know lol. Changing the fluid it sooner will not help this issue.Transmission fluid on these car is a light brown amber color it looks nothing like your tipical red trans fluid. Replacing the sealing sleeve and pan gasket will most likely run you like $800 at the dealer. Also they will need to replace any fluid that you have lost and the fluid it self is very expensive.

I believe my brother just had this done on his 07 E90. Are these also common on the 07 E92s?

Yeah E92 can have the same problem. I worked on one E92 335i because of this problem. It just depends on what transmission the car has.

what are the part numbers for the o-ring and pan gasket?

This is really common on our cars, I had mine replaced around 45,000 miles.

I replaced over this winter. According to what I gathered the older car got a smaller tranny seal then the newer ones. I have a 07 e92 and it started leaking when I moved to connecticut. Because of the temp change the seal actually got smaller as it got cold. My car had 53k miles before I replaced it, but since i was down their i also replace the pan/filter and fluid. My cost for everything was about $350.

Literally just had mine replaced this past week. The dealer had to drop the oil pan on the trans to get it though? I didn't want to mess anything up so I let them do it.

More likely in cold weather areas, seals hold up much better in california

2 liter of tranny fluid lost>>...wow...did u do any damage to the tranny..thats the easiest way to fry it..believe me i have done it.

u didnt get a warning light before u lost that much fluid..?

I have diamond warranty. And no, a light never went off. Maybe the mechanic over exaggerated the amount of fluid i lost. I think i may have got some trans shadow faults but they never threw a CEL. Works fine.

It wouldn't throw the CEL. The CEL or Service Engine Soon light is only for emissions related problems.

Hmm never knew that. I had a couple misfires a year back and the CEL went on. Is a misfire an emissions related problem?

I had the same thing happen to me 1 week after getting my CPO 2006 330i. The dealer fixed it for me as it was still under factory warranty. In my case I am not sure how they did not catch it as it was a CPO. Glad you got it fixed. You should be good for another 40,000 + miles.
