DIY Replacing a manual shift knob on an AT.
On your original AT shift knob, put the car in neutral and pull the knob up as hard as you can, no damage to the car.
Place manual shift knob on top. No need for the trigger, just put your foot on the brake and good to go. Last edited by Route 16; 04-23-2013 at 11:36 AM.. |

no trigger? so you can move the lever into any gear while you're on the brakes? I dont like that idea since there's no safety trigger.
Imagine driving 40mph and you're coming to a red light or stop, as you hit the brakes and accidently hit the lever and it goes into reverse or park, thats a big NO NO. I like how it stops at neutral now. |

*Why put a manual knob on a AT because we can and looks cool. Style over Function? yeah yeah it still functions. |

Have you considered replacing the trim surround to the full leather boot from the MT? It may take some creativity, but this would at least make it look right. You could also install a MT shift knob without the gear markings on top if this is really your thing...I think this is why it looks a bit ridiculous to me as you have markings that clearly are not correct for the application right next to your automatic (PRND) markings...like putting a 6MT shift known on a 5MT so that people think you have a 6-speed but easier to tell. |

I like the idea of have a smaller and shorter knob as our stock one is tall and is in the way at times, but I'm not willing to take the risk. If only a safety can be built in someone. |

I feel like a poser enough shifting my steptronic like I have a manual. I wouldn't want to add this and really declare it with certainty.
If it feels better to shift with it, go for it. I'm cheap and wouldn't pay unless maybe it was for paddle shifters. Unless... If someone broke into my car and stole my handle, I would look for a replacement. Last edited by Pittsburger; 07-07-2013 at 06:10 AM.. |

It is an automatic 328i with a hello kitty sun shade - it is his wife's car I bet!
At least put a manual shift boot/surround on it!
