I'll be very interested to see how they 'right' the ship.
I've heard a value figure of $450m, so they aren't going to drag it out to deep waters and chop it into pieces - even with the damage sustained there has to be masses of value there.

Full damage assessment, patch up the hull damage, secure internal watertight boundaries, pump out for Britain (Italy), and waiting for a very high tide will also help.

I bet it is salavageable but it will never Cruise again and will nd up being a floating casino/hotel in Hong Kong, Taiwan or somewhere oriental.

Do you really think it will be "recycled" like that Peter?!

Surely because people have died they will not.

Because people have died in it, that is why I think it will never cruise again. That will not stop it being sold, renamed, re registered and turned into something else.

Look at Exxon Valdez, no one died and it didn't turn turtle, but the biggest environmental disasters ever, the ship was repaired and has been renamed numerous times, berthed in places like Milford Haven and no one really cares.

A cruise ship is subtlely different as it is more emotional with 1000's of people onboard, but it is not without precedence that such ships have accidents and are returned to service. I suspect there is also significant reputational damage to the Cruise Line.

I've watched as an old fishing boat was re-equipped.

It had previously been to the bottom of the ocean, dragged under by a sub.

Fishermen are the most superstitious lot .... they'd have to sell that on somewhere far away.

Believe it or not a good outbreak of diarrhea on a cruise ship can cause mayhem and kill people.

I just have it on good info , next couple off days will see it unfold,

The salvage game is very lucrative but ,I was told by a Salvage engineer the sums involved are very difficult to work out upfront, Most of the time it is written in stone the terms are in monetary value after salvage ,The salvage master has to ensure the vessel retains as much value as possible, Think this ensures a speedy salvage and with as little damage as possible.

50% off a ship turned in to scrap metal aint much , Be under no illusions this boat is no longer worth a fraction of the 450m euros it cost in 2006.

I was told they need to wait for the search for bodies to be completed then they are in to remove thousands off tonnes of fuel then the game begins.

Have you seen some off the pictures the one with the rock the size off a truck sticking in/out the hull fook me the guy standing there looks tiny against it .

If the Sea remains calm I think they have a real chance to Salvage it .

Does anyone know the area?

If it had been further away from the coast it may not have happened at all.

It seems to me that the problem was caused by employing antiques dealer and loveable rogue Lovejoy as captain.

Reports just in:

Liner has moved 9cm in choppy weather, search postponed as the Liner is resting on a ledge and could drop off reef and sink 100m to ocean floor.

is that to say he was only 9cm off course and then there was 100m depth? Unsure if I subscribe to that theory.

No, Carlos was saying that the rescue operation has/was temporarily called off as the boat was shifting earlier today. I don't think he was suggesting this disaster happened because he was the length of a Richmond's sausage off course.

Sheps is right. It's on it's side on a ledge and has shifted 9cm, so rescue search called off because if it were to slip any further it would fall off the ledge and sink to a depth of 100m.

Schettino is fucked. He was on a life boat early and was ordered by the coast guard to go back on. Not sure if he did.

The transcripts show heated telephone exchanges took place between captain Schettino and harbour master officials in the hours after he struck the rocks at around 9.40pm on Friday evening.

At 9.49pm Schettino is asked: 'Is everything ok?' He replied: 'Yes, just a small technical problem.'

This was despite the hull having a 70m gash.

There was silence until half past midnight when officials managed to contact the captain - who by now had got off a lifeboat and safely on shore.

Hundreds of passengers were still onboard as the order to abandon ship had only been given an hour earlier.

An official at Livorno harbour asked: 'How many passengers are left to evacuate captain?' He answered: 'I've called the company and they say around 40.'

The official, who knew from reports at the scene that hundreds were still onboard, added: 'How come so few? Are you still onboard captain?'

Captain Schettino replied: 'No, I'm not onboard, the ship's beached, we have abandoned.' To which the shocked official responded: 'What? You have abandoned ship?' He answered: 'No, what are you talking about abandoning.'

Minutes later he was contacted again and told: 'Get back on board, get back to the ship and co-ordinate the rescue. You need to tell me how many people are onboard, how many women, how many children. You need to organise the rescue.

'Captain this is an order, I am in charge now, you have given the order to abandon ship and you need to get back to coordinate the rescue, OK. There are already bodies.'

Captain Schettino replied in a whisper: 'How many?' with the harbour master shouting at him: 'You tell me. What do you want to do? Go home? You now get back on board and tell me what you are going to do.'

He replied: 'Alright, I'm going'. But he failed to obey the order and instead was reportedly seen getting into a taxi which took him from Seagull Point, the reef where the Concordia had beached, to the harbour at Giglio.

5 more bodies recovered from the vessel this morning, which brings the death toll up to 11.
There are still 24 missing.

A tragedy caused by ego and vanity IMO.

70 passengers (so far) have signed up for a class action against the owners of the Concordia.

Noel Coward once said "I only travel on Italian ships, in the event of sinking there's none of that 'women and children first' nonsense. He was saying it as a joke.

I heard the transcript on the radio and the actions of the captain appear to be disgusting. I believe there is at least one 5 year old child amongst the missing. Hopefully some of the missing can still be found.
