Another post on Oil changing / What I was just told...

Just an FYI on the answer I got from my dealer when I ask if I should change my oil at 1500. He stated definably NOT because the oil rings need time to seat, early and especially too frequent oil changes result in engines that burn more oil later in life.

His recommendation was at 5-7k for the first change, let the oil have time to mature and let some wear happen to seat the oil rings correctly. He said owner that do this will have less oil consumption in the future.

Now on my X5 I changed early and often and it burns about 1 quart every 1k my E46 I did not change early and it does not burn a drop. I am going to opt for what my service writer recommended and see what happens this time.

There are as many opinions on this as there are forum members so you can add this to the mix.

It may need dedicated break-in oil for a longer period than you're allowing.

This confirms information I received from a trusted professional who asked to remain anonymous. I just passed break-in (1200 miles) and was debating to change at 1500, 2500 or 5000. With this additional info, I think I'll wait till 5000.
Thanks Cleaner for sharing!

ROTFL.... Oh My.. I have been rendered speechless...

The If-Then Argument being used is not logical, Failure to break in a motor properly leads to oil consumption, NOT changing your oil HAS TO BE BMWs canned and official comment when they are advertising FREE Service for 4/50k.

Sorry, but this is goofy.

This recommendation was not to wait for free service, but to change it early (5-7k) and that would obviously be a "customer pay" job. So I don't think this qualifies as a canned answer. It's also not the first time I have heard it, in fact I have been told the original oil fill from the factory has additional chemistry specifically designed to aid break in and removing that early is not advised.

I have no idea whats right and frankly I am not so sure anyone does.

Fair Enough, but (And I am NOT all Old and Wise) it's been my experiance thus far that even though they are fine people, 99% of the shit you hear in a dealership is mostly that. Poo.... Especially when it runs contradictory to everything you've heard in the past regarding

BUT, as you said it is curious. I had the Service Manager tell me "You're an owner after my own heart" when I told em' that I had changed the oil at 250 miles.

Break in oil is one thing, but with an initial change scheduled at 15000 I doubt that an alternative "break in Oil" would be in use.

NOW, Back in the day folks used to hear horror stories about switching to synthetic oil too soon. That doing so will NOT allow your engine to break in properly. This makes sense, but in theory BMWs 3 liter E54 is supposedly broken in at the factory... 40 hours or something worth...

So yeah...

total bullshit.

I changed my oil right after break-in and often after that.

I have 33,000 km and basically haven't burnt any oil at all.

Rumor has it that BMW will come out with a LIFETIME no oil change policy for all vehicles.

I wanted an oil change at 4000 miles and the dealer advised me not to and I was even going to pay for it.

Do not believe everything you hear from a SA. Majority of them are full of shit!

I've heard several BMW techs state that if it was their new 3,5,6,7, X3, X5 or Z4 that they would do the initial oil change @ 1200 miles and then every 5,000 miles after that. Not too many BMW Techs agree with BMWs 15,000 mile oil intervals.

* Furthermore, there was a time that ALL new BMWs received a 1200 mile inspection. At that time the oil/filter were changed. Presently the only new BMWs that still receive the 1200 mile inspection are M cars.

The same oil that you purchase from your BMW Center parts dept. or the tech uses to refill during an oil change (comes from parts), is identical to what is in the vehicle when you take delivery. No difference.

I dont think thats true in the US, check the spec on the oil they supply. My local dealer still regularly supply LL-98 and LL-01. The current European spec is at least LL-04, unless they are importing lower quality oil for US bound cars you will be getting a car built with LL-04 or higher.

A few techs told me a week ago that the oil from the factory is changed when the vehilce arrives at the VPC.

+1^^^^

It's one thing to debate whether a 1500 mi. oil change is necessary (it's probably not, but I did it), but quite another to state that doing it will cause the motor to burn oil later in life. The real problem is the BS cannot manifest in real life, but over the web, before you know it people are scared to change their oil too soon.

My SA said to do it IF you own the car and plan to keep it. If you lease, who cares, it's not your car and you wont have it long enough to make any difference, go 15k. Not only that, even though I'm not a member and probably will never be, do folks here really think BMWCCA doesn't know what they're talking about when they recommend the break-in oil change? WAcky.
