2A82 Vanos Inlet Code

I hope someone can help me out with this. It's for my girlfriend's 2006 325i auto. The car recently had an SES light so, I ran codes for it and there were several for the eccentric shaft sensor and the 2A82 code for VANOS intake. I got the parts and replaced the eccentric shaft sensor, the plug on the sensor was full of oil just like others had mentioned. While I was working on it I replaced the intake VANOS solenoid. After driving 15 miles or so, the SES light comes back. The eccentric shaft sensor codes were gone but, the 2A82 code came back. I read elsewhere that I may need to replace the Camshaft Position Sensor (13627525014). I replaced that sensor and the VANOS intake code returned after a few miles. I'm wondering what else I may need to replace in order to fix this. Thanks for the help!

Did you replace the exhaust solenoid as well? Also look into the Vanos filters on the left side of the motor those get clogged with debris as well.
Look here V

Ok, so the vanos filters have been replaced and I cleared the code, but it came back after about 5 miles or so. To answer the question earlier, only the Intake solenoid has been replaced. I cleaned the exhaust solenoid and reinstalled it, since I keep getting a code for the intake side, I didn't think the exhaust solenoid would be the issue. Any other thoughts on what the issue might be?

I'd check the wiring harness for damage both physically and electrically. Could be a rodent chewed on the harness somewhere. If there is rodent damage, it is usually covered under the comprehensive coverage of your (hers) insurance.

I'll double check it just in case but, I don't think there are any issues with the wiring harness. The corrugated tubing around the wires in the places I have been working is intact.

Have/had the same issues.

Replaced the Eccentric Shaft sensor yesterday, also had a code for Exhaust Camsensor. Cleaned the vanos solenoids (swapped them as well) and replaced the exhaust cam sensors - and now I have the code on the intake side.

Time for a new Vanos Solenoid.

Another good thread here. It is still too soon for me to claim victory, but as you can see on the picture, there is a good chance that the vanos code was coming from the anti-reflux valve for me. Since it's the only thing you didn't change yet...

Is the anti-reflux valve the same thing as the check valve (Part#: 11367541692)? If so, I replaced those over the weekend and the code returned. I'm not sure what the CMP is, I have not seen that mentioned before and I can't find anything searching for that, could you tell me what that stands for? So far, I've replaced:
Intake Solenoid
Intake Camshaft Position Sensor
Both Non-return (Check) valves (Part: 11367541692)
and I've cleaned the exhaust solenoid.

Yes my bad it is the same. From my sample of 1 I would not expect the check valve to be faulty except if fault does not follow the solenoid swap and also condition changes with braking.

Just wanted to follow up on this and see if anyone has suggestions. Just to recap, the 2A82 code keeps returning, so far I have:
Replaced VANOS Solenoid
Replaced the Non-Return (Check Valves)
Replaced the Intake Camshaft Sensor.

Recently, I pulled the valve cover and noticed a piece of the Inlet Camshaft adjustment had broken off.
I've searched and have not found another instance of this happening. I will try to get a picture of it but, for now, here is a picture of the part I'm talking about.
I'm wondering if this is what is causing the code. I've noticed that the replacement part looks a little different than the one that is broken, I'm assuming they are interchangeable.
The new ones look like this.

I do not see what is broken on your picture, but it is known that the springy thing inside the vanos gear can break and result in the same underperforming vanos condition with slow adjustement.

Here are some pictures of the piece that broke off of the adjustment unit for the intake camshaft. I'm guessing they have changed designs on this part because I haven't been able to find a replacement one that looks like this, all of the new ones have the black cap.

I just wanted to update this thread. So I spoke with a service advisor at the local dealership who recommended replacing the Vanos adjustment unit. So, I purchased the Inlet Adjustment Unit, a new impulse sending wheel and bolt and got started. I rented the timing tools from bimmertoolrental. Overall, this was not terribly difficult, just time consuming, with most of that being removing the valve cover. So far, this has fixed the SES light and error code. Here are a few photos

How many miles on the car?

Ive got an N51 (2011 328i) that is having same issue throwing SES light. Just did the whole 9 with valve cover less than 10K miles ago and now its got a rough start.

Ive replaced intake solenoid, intake camshaft sensor and engine is full of oil. Hoping I dont have to drop another $500 on that part next

Thanks

Jake

I'm surprised no-one else has mentioned looking into the oil filter housing cap. If you had recently performed an oil and filter change is it possible the cap was damaged or broken? It seems to be common as the plastic wears with oil and many removals over the years.

Obviously this is a four-year old thread but others will have this problem in the future and reference these threads by searching. Did the OP ever find a resolution to the vanos codes?

Here is a thread that was very helpful for me: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1479390

It turned out to be a damaged oil filter cap, replaced that with filter, erased the codes and they have not come back. Car is driving great, lots of power, no rough idle, no SES light.

So having similar issues but has happened to me before. Did the clean about 10k miles ago and things have been good but recently had stalling and it has gotten progressively worse over past week.

Pulled the codes and: all inlet side
- 2A82 intake vanos
- 2a98 crankshaft inlet camshaft
- 2a9a camshaft sensor inlet

Did the vanos solenoid clean procedure with air and brake cleaner (as before) and since this was all inlet side, I swapped the solenoid positions to see if the codes moved to the exhaust/outlet side.

Car seemed much better did several miles on trip 1. Then a few more on trip 2 and it stalled once. Trip 3 4-5 miles more with no issue.

Now just pulls the 2a82 code, so still intake.

Based on this or the fact the code didn't migrate to the outlet/exhaust side, any feedback?

Thx

Have you checked the VANOS filters and oil filter cage as mentioned above?

I did not check filters yet but will.

Cleared the code and was fine all day so hoping it was an adaptation or relearning that needed to happen.

I did check the oil housing cap and I'm not sure what constitutes broken or too loose.

The cage does connect from the cap. Inside there is a spring and a black plunger/nipple piece. It all reassembles fine and holds the filter to the cap. But not sure how loose is too loose. It's snug when it's tightened down.
