Followed this today - cut out the charcoal filter and replaced my stock air filter with a K&N.

Feels great so far, revs easier as others have mentioned and slightly smoothed out the power. Not very much sound difference but above 3.5k does sound a bit louder to me. Too early to tell for gas mileage but I wouldn't be surprised to see a slight improvement.

Thanks for the DIY

Did this today.

I followed OPs method, just removed MAF and sandpapered the glue down. I didn't get it down as far as a dremel but all debris was gone. Washed with dish soap and water and put in a K&N.

Drove to the gym and WOT a couple times as well as holding her at 4k for a short period of time just to see if I noticed anything.

No difference so far but I feel like I hear a "wosh" sound when I let off gas. Maybe I just never noticed before. Hopefully I installed right.

The hardest part for me was the housing that lead to engine. Mine would not snap into place. I finally grabbed some of the ridges further back and pressed. That did it.

Dunno if it does anything, I'm worried I left a little debris or water drop in the housing that may get I to the engine. I was careful but I'm paranoid.

Worth an hour and about 50-100 buck depending on what parts and tools you have just to mess around if your into that.

Newbie with a warranty did not do the charcoal delete but... the vid and posts were helpful. Thanks.

I changed the air filter to an AFE.

Hi

My car is a CPO 2009 328i 6MT (46k mi) that I purchased 4 weeks ago. It still has a year left on the bumper to bumper warranty, but that doesn't include trim items apparently, because my emblem flew off the hood and onto a Dallas freeway, and the SA said, "sorry, nope." So new emblem ordered from Tischer.

After reading on the forums and viewing on youtube, I ordered an AFE oiled filter. I had an oiled K&N on a 2001 Audi TT APR Tuned and Exhaust - that was the little engine that could ... and had no issues with the K&N over 50k mi with it.

I carefully took out the air box, cleaned it thoroughly, and dropped in the AFE. Re-installing seemed easier since I had cleaned off the dirt and grime with All Purpose and 303 Protectant. You do have to be sure to place your hand under the hose leading to the MAF to make certain you've got a tight seal.

I saw where the charcoal delete would be a relatively easy mod. It does look restrictive, but gosh, I don't want the dealer to blame me for doing anything more than an AFE Filter.

I also cleaned out the cabin filter and tidied up the engine. It's fun to do something besides the golf habit...

Thanks, guys.

Doing this as we speak! Already cut the filter out, and used a dremel to smooth all the surfaces. I rinsed the housing down so now I'm just waiting for it to dry in the sun! DIY FTW

I did it. Better throttle response and better mpg. An absolute must do mod. Seriously. The charcoal filter is ridiculously restrictive. It's like a paper filter but very restrictive. Get rid of it.

Video on doing this mod

I did this mod this weekend. Since a lot of the pictures on this thread are missing and I couldn't find a video that showed clearly how to do this and demonstrated some sort of pre and post mod results I made my own.

See the video here

hope this helps those that are unsure if they want to do this or not.

Would recommend this mod as I experienced good results

Hi - I'm a 1st time BMW owner. I picked up a E93 a few weeks ago and started reading the forums 3 weeks before that. Thanks to all the info posted here, I followed the directions to remove the carbon filter and felt an immediate change in throttle response.
Thanks for posting the original "how to"

At this intake chamber there is a vertical baffle/diffuser, whatever you want to call it. Any reason that can't be cut out?

Couldn't figure out how to copy the picture from Post #5 to show where I'm talking about.

The result is like this.

Why your charcoal filter was so dirty with debris ?
No dirt should get onto it if the outer filter is sealed properly in the air filter box.

I’ve been thinking about doing the charcoal air filter removal and I’ve seen many people install a K&N air filter. Does the K&N filter make any difference?? Or should I keep the oem one.
