Strange Trans shifting

Hi Guys,

2009 335d, 86000 kms, bought at 76k

I love the car but HATE the transmission. I'm a purist - love my standard shift, but as we all know, can't get a stick with the 335d.

It seems to get confused when at low throttle - it hesitates to shift, then shifts poorly. If i'm very heavy on the throttle, it shifts perfectly. It's never rough, but never smooth the way it should be. The 8 speed in the family's F30 shifts much much better.

I know that i've got the latest flash in the trans as they flashed everything when I had the NOX sensors done (and again when I had the iPod kit retrofitted)

Has anyone seen this? Any thoughts on what I could to improve it?

Reset the transmission ...... Just search for those keywords.

You could also try upgrading the software to the Alpina.

The programming for city driving leaves something to be desired. IIRC it's around 40-45 mph where it's cant decide as to whether it wasn't to down/up shift when traveling at this speed. The 8HP doesn't have this issues because of the extra gears.

I did that trick when I first got the car, but will try it again

Does that update apply to the diesel?

No the alpina doesn't work.

I have the same complaints. Mine is more over the torque converter, it doesn't lock up low enough at low throttle and then when it does its kind of obvious. I have just chalked it up to not being used to a transmission that I don't get to control.

Missed that its a diesel - Is the version of your transmission software dated ? You could see if there's any upgrades available.

Alpina flash?! I wish. It's only available for N54/N55 engines.

Our transmission isn't the greatest but it's predictable and precise most of the time. Keyword is "most."

Have you changed the Trans filter and ATF? If not, at your mileage you will likely notice a difference.

Part of the "rough shift"could also be DSC kicking in. It seems to overreact when the car is cold with mine. There is a 90deg off camber turn from a stop that I make every day as I leave my house (50ft from the garage) and DSC almost always kicks in. It's annoying enough that my wife is actually considering the LSD just to help get rid if it.

I've only got 87kms, so around 54k miles - time to do a flush already?

I doubt is the DSC - Overall, I drive her fairly calmly in the city and only really punch her on highway on ramps

That's actually what bothers me with the DSC; it kicks in in certain situations under little throttle and is far too abrupt.

I changed my atf + filter at 65 and my wife's at 50. I would encourage you to perform at 50 if you plan on keeping it long term (or if the shifting is bothering you). It should certainly be worth a shot. I can tell you, there was a noticeable difference on mine at 65kmi and my vehicle is a 2011 also a noticeable difference on my wife's (same Trans) and hers was at 50kmi in a 2007MY.

Check that your tires pressures are to spec as per the values on the door. Stock wheels and tires I am assuming. If out of spec, adjust values and reset shift points.
