What are you all paying at the dealership for the alarm? Also for those who have it, is it worth it?

I bought it online for $200, installed the hardware myself, and paid the dealer $115 to have it coded. Works just fine. The debate goes on as to whether or not an alarm does you any good. I like it because I get the audible beep when locking and it makes the clown nose less useless.

Be aware that there is a problem with some of the new sirens that come in the alarm kit. New Progman software will be required to make those work. Bring it up with the parts guy you buy from to make sure what you need.

I found this out the hard way. My August PCD came with no alarm because a bulletin was released at the last minute forbidding alarm installations. I think PROGMAN 23 fixes the siren issue.

It's made specifically for your car and integrates with all the systems on the car perfectly. But more importantly it keeps the clown nose from being totally useless.

Theres no wiring diagrams (at least that I have been able to find) for E90 or E92 self installation of an alarm. If you install an aftermarket alarm, you have the option to have the doors lock automatically when you're walking away from the car.

You have the option of having the car lock while you are walking away from the car without any alarm installed. It can be configured through the menu. The directions are on page 22 of the manual for cars without I-Drive.

The only reason I would want to get an aftermarket alarm would be to enable this "lock doors automatically after exiting car" feature. I wouldnt even enable the aftermarket alarm-- only this option of it locking the doors for me.

Attached is what I see in the idrive manual. Is it the "Relock door if not opened" option that does this? Also, do you think it does this or does your car actually lock the doors for you when you walk away (without using the FOB)?

I will confess that I haven't actually tried this, but I will tonight and let you know how it goes. I don't have I-Drive, so my interface is different than yours, but the manual says essentially the same thing. I'll let you know what happens with my car.

It only locks the doors if you unlock the car and do not open any door. It will not automatically lock if you just get out and walk away.

He's right. I set mine to auto lock last night, got out of the car and waited almost 5 minutes... nothing. I guess once the door is opened to exit the car, the feature is disabled (maybe to keep you from locking keys inside, dunno). Sorry if I misled anyone with my earlier post, I should have tested the theory before I started handing out false information.

No worries-- it was more "false hope" than anything else

If I can find a wiring diagram for the E92, I will definitely install a "passive locking" device that monitors the doors, ignition, etc to determine when to automatically lock the car. However, if BMW would do this, they could do a MUCH better job since they could use:

1. Proximity of comfort access FOB
2. Weight on passenger seat
etc, to determine when to lock doors

Just doesnt make sense to me that it doesnt already work like this (especially with CA). My guess is cars built post March 2007 will have this feature by default.
