Write off! New Car Choice - HELP!!
So, there I was cruising up the motorway in the fast lane, minding my own business, when a Honda Jazz appears out of the ether, decides my lane is big enough for the both if us, and comes on over to see me.
At this point i'm thinking....Honda Jazz or central reservation....? Surely the Jazz I hear you cry. However, in my desire not to flip, spin, roll or engage in any other death defying activities, I opted for the barrier. So after 'railing' the barrier for approx 50m, I thought righ, f**k the Jazz, i'm coming back in to my lane, at which point all 4 tyres hit tarmac and I snaked for what seemed like an eternity, missed a couple of artics but managed to hold it using my advanced driving skills....... Long short of it, my 320d E92 M-sport has gone to the bavarian grave yard in the sky (along with my 19" VMRs, HR springs, evolve remap, black grill and repeaters). Anyway, now the important bit. TIME TO GO CAR SHOPPING...... I'm pretty sure I'm going to get another E92, the big question is which one? I have been going round in circles for days. I had the same problem when I purchased my 320d. I created endless spreadsheets looking at purchase costs and running costs for diesel vs petrol and all the rest of it. The defining factor in my purchase is that I commute 90 miles a day. If it were not for this I'd be driving around in an M3. Last time I got so stressed procrastinating, one day I ripped up all my spreadsheets and did the most sensible thing I've ever done and went for the 2.0d regardless. Now, after having the 2.0d (and averaging 44mpg), i'm thinking I want something different. 330d/330i/335d/335i..... Are these larger engines REALLY worth the extra £££ each month and what MPG returns are these cars actually getting in the real world??? (yes I know there's a thread, but this is a wider subject about overall appeal). Or is it the same old classic novelty factor which wears off after 6 months and leaves you thinking you should have bought a 2.0 diesel!?! Would any owners of these top end models care to comment on whether the relationship is, or was a harmonious one? Any regrets? |

I commute 80 miles a day, have a pretty heavy right foot and a 335i. Currently averaging 26mpg but , more importantly grin from ear to ear everytime i drive it.
I suppose you could get the best of both worlds with a 335d.

I just got a 320d e92 and maybe im in the honeymoon period but i love it! Cheap tax and insurance. I did look at 330d's but i thought when im commuting to work when am I going to notice/need the extra power when i'm sat on the motorway with cruise control on? I do however get my fuel paid for so i do have an extra incentive to get a more economical car

I've had a 320d and regularly drive a 520d. I'd really be hard pushed to spend my own money on a 4 pot diesel again. No offence to owners, but they just leave me cold.

I have a 335d, had it three years now which is a lifetime for me, still love it and the power/torque still amazes me sometimes ....... and its not even mapped. Getting mid 30s with mostly A road driving which I reckon with almost 300bhp on tap that is pretty perfect.

You and me differ greatly in terms of what one "should" buy.
I would never, and will never - get into the 335d and think "I should have kept my 2 litre diesel". It's got the minimum power I would now accept going forward from any daily drive I will run. If MPG is all that matters to you, the 330d will not dissappoint. It's a great engine, even better with a remap - STREETS ahead of the 320d, but still returns over 50 on a casual motorway jaunt.

If LCI prices are in scope. This. 100 times this. Because it's just a detuned 330d so get's same power for less moneys outlayed after a simple remap
Good option ..

I'm covering about 1800 miles a month commuting. Personal is not much at all
I'm paying for the fuel. (I had an M3 when the company were paying!) so a 325d is actually the same as the 330d then, just with different software..............interesting. I'd be interested in hearing what an 330i owners have say?? My calculations tell me that I could run a petrol engine averaging 30mpg for approx £90 more a month than my 320d avg 44mpg. This is just fuel cost. I do quite like the idea of having a petrol again |

I have a 325i LCi with the same 3.0L engine as the 330i. (Just de-tuned)
I understand the 330i gets the same MPG, and I currently get 32mpg out of mine. I drive with a fairly heavy foot, and do 60/40 Motorway and city. Would recomend the engine, but it does need to be worked. None of that imidate pickup you get from a d when crusing. Drop a cog or 2 and you are flying and smiling ear to ear tho ! :d |

Saying that though my commute has come down form 75 miles to 10 miles if I go straight to work. Which I don't as I like a bit of time with her and get up a hour earlier. Last edited by EXSKIN; 11-07-2012 at 03:53 PM.. |

325D (remap) or 330D seem to me to be the best compromise overall. They give decent economy on the longer drives that some of the petrol cars can't and the single turbo designs seem more reliable than the 335D engine. Me, i still want a petrol engine and wont be looking to diesel any time soon, but I can understand why others might.

sorry to hear about your car dude
i have a pre lci 325D remapped and its great fun, good power, loads of torque and very economical! go for a pre lci 325D or 330D and the money you save from going for a pre lci you can spend modding it!

theres also some argument for going for a LATE pre LCI
some of the interior materials were dumbed down on the LCI (sun visors) and features like the REST function on the heater were replaced with the Single zone function. If you dont mind the looks of the pre LCI (which i don't) then a late, high spec one of these could almost be a better bet. |

High 30's MPG on a near 300bhp car, tonnes of torque and coming in at decent mileage sub £18k is a pure win IMO, but I would be biased! 330D manual would be my next option but I'm a D wh*re through and through.
Yes they might be more costlier upfront but man do they pull! Having come from a 320D and driving in a 520D recently just makes me appreciate my 335D to another level. I get up early to have a bit of a longer drive sometimes just to enjoy her! Do what's best but don't be afraid of mileage on a 335D. On motorwary you'll get 40+ and mixed driving, mid to high 30's. After a remap, even more! Even the LCI 325D is worth a short but if it were me, 330D or 335D if the price warrantied! Happy shopping :-) |
