Prepare for "CLATTER":

From cold, car been standing all afternoon, had to quickly turn down the stereo, wheel was offset from parking - taken as I went to the car park to go home this evening :

And literally few seconds later (just enough time to save the last clip to memory) with the window open :

And following the saving of the above, from holding the camera out the window :

This last one is what others hear. Not really relevant, as I never hear it myself. But included for completeness.

I think this is very fair .. there is minimal clatter on a 6cyl BMW diesel at start up.

I'd still rather have petrol though. I don't want 'languid torque'.

I have both, Petrol and Diesel. And the smooooth, seductive torque in my 335D as my daily driver ticks all my boxes. We'll just have to agree to differ.

But "clatter" should be scratched from the lists of the detractors.

I agree .. clatter is unfair when it comes to the 6 cyl BMW diesels (although the 4cyl engines do have a slight tractorishness about them).

is 320d 4 cylinder? That explains why I was wondering that the 320d I recently went out in clattered.

Still a great engine .. probably the most powerful 2.0 litre lump out there (petrol or diesel), but it doesn't have the refinement of a 6.

I think it should be remembered that BMW's diesel engines are the best out there. Absolutely nothing wrong with the diesel engine at all. In fact my test drive was in the 335d - I was sold actually driving the 335d. The fact that I got the 335i was because of that "extra" lust for power/performance and the fact that I'm not doing much mileage these days.

However, if I had to do any sort of serious mileage, I would go for the 335d. In fact, if and when my job requires me to do some driving, I will probably trade my car in for a 335d.

What if your company paid for you petrol so you just paid tax at 40% on private fuel (effectively 60% discount) AND the car was your own so co car tax rules did not apply ...

Would you get a diesel then - even if you did 30,000 miles a year?

It's still down to C02 Emissions. £14,400 x your car's c02 band x 40/22% tax rate.

On a 335 petrol, at 40% tax rate:

14,400 [fixed amount for petrol workings] x 32% [c02] x 40% [tax band]

= paying tax of £153.60 a month [£1843.20 a year].

The 335 diesel is 30% emissions, so about £9.50 cheaper a month tax wise.

Not for me though ..

I pay for all of my fuel for my privately owned car on my company credit card. At the end of the tax year I note my private and business mileage and my employer declares the fuel costs for private milage as a 'benefit in kind'.

So I pay 40% tax on private fuel - which is a 60% discount (in fact it's actually more because I would otherwise be paying for fuel on income after tax).

The 335d will always be the best 3 series diesel car.

When the M3 comes out you'll all be a little bit bothered your car isnt good enough any more

Doesn't worry me at all.

The 335i has already knocked my 330i off the top of the standard BMW range.

There is always something better ... and there will eventually be a better 335d.

Imagine how 535d owners feel now, knowing that the 335d is more powerful because it is based on the more modern 3.0d engine.

I have a fuel card supplied by work and at the end of the year they submit the whole lot on my P11d, I then fill in my tax return which takes off the business miles. I then pay 40% tax on the rest.

I do no business miles and average about 23mpg in my 330ci manual and I go everywhere in it and it costs me about £80 a month.

Still fancy a 335d though

I thought it was the same one (engine). What's the difference?
On this note, my brother reckoned the 520d is only a second or so slower than 325d 0-60 because the 5 series is made from lighter materials - is that a load of rubbish ? (the statement not the materials/5 series !)
