Engine overheated?

after driving for about 10 minutes today i got that yellow engine overheating warning sign, one minute later it was followed by red sign and car lost power. I was in the parking lot of local gym i go to so i went in and after about an hour i started the car and warning light was gone. I made it home and parked, left car idling of about 10 minutes and warning lights didnt come back. However i could hear my fan working really hard. Is this a sign that water pump is going out??
Its a 2007 335i with 74K miles and i just bought it two weeks ago
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It's done, get it changed at an indy, I think it's $500-800 total with labor, I could be wrong.
Water-pump, t-stat, coolant, do all of that, good for another 7 years *knock on wood.

It's probably the pump. You can check for sure. There are BMW trouble codes stored in the ECU that will indicated at what mileage the pump failed. You need a BMW scan tool to read them. If the code(s) are present, the pump is on its way out.

It's just what happens with these cars.

Most likely your wp took a dump. Make sure to Replace both wp and tstat.

Thank you for your inputs. Just scanned it and i got error "2E81"
Called a used car dealer i purchased it from and he told me to get him estimate and "we can work something out". I'm hoping he will pick up the bill......or at least part of it.
Is this a good deal on this part?

That's the pump speed deviation code. Your pump is on the way out. Time for the t-stat and water pump replacement. They should only charge you for the price of the t-stat; there is no extra labor involved in replacing the t-stat when the pump is replaced.

Check you OFH gasket.
It is a theory that the the gasket breaks up small rubber, that jams the wP.

I believe it.

There is a code for a jammed water pump. The pieces of the OFHG are very small, I doubt they'd jam the pump and stall it.

If you drain your coolant, filter the drained coolant, And you will see what may cause damage to the water pump.

Exactly what just happened to me last week.

Spent the weekend doing the repair myself.

If you can find an indy to do the repair for ~ $200 plus parts, take the offer.

All of the local places here but 1 wanted $1200+tax to do it... The other guy got back to me after I had already bought the part.

I got my parts from GetBMWParts.com

They are a forum sponsor I believe, and they were the best price for the entire kit. Water pump, Tstat and bolts (they are aluminum and 1 time use)

I've drained my coolant 5 times. Replaced the OFHG once at 161K and have taken apart the coolant pump. I highly doubt gasket material would jam the pump. The bits are tiny. If the entire gasket somehow broke free from being sandwiched between the OFH and the head in one piece, maybe it might jam the pump, maybe.
