I noticed my invoice after a free oil change and it got me thinking. I see the oil listed as "5W30 Diesel" and was wondering what brands do you guys use? What are the best ones out there?
Any idea what brand BMW uses? I live in Toronto, Canada so I'm sure the oil types will vary from continent to continent. |

This topic is a HUGE can of worms. On the one hand is the camp that says use the factory oil while under warranty (the relevant BMW spec is LL-04), and to use anything else is a waste of money. In the other camp are those that like to study specs of oils, and feel they can find LL-04 oils that are superior to the factory oil (which is made by Castrol, by the way), and by using a superior oil are getting superior protection for their engine.
And that doesn't even scratch the topic of oil change interval, which is a whole internet war in its on right. If you look in the maintenance/warranty area of the board, there are some incredible slap fights over this.

I guess I should add that studying the significance of the LL-04 spec is the best place to start; it is a low SAPS oil, and that is very important for our cars because of their DPF. Any oil you select must meet LL-04 for this reason.

GD, lots of oils now meet BMW LL04. Castrol Pro Diesel 5W30 is what BMW dealers use, but Motul, Mobil, AMSOIL and other Castrol products also meet LL04 specs. The LL04 spec as well as others like the ACEA C3/C4 and API CJ-4 spec and others are meant to have low ash components so that oil ingested during the EGR process does not plug up the diesel particulate filter.
Cheers D.

Just buy your diesel from a reputable brand, e.g. Shell, Chevron etc. Try to find diesel that has the higest cetane content and your car will be happier because of it.
Personally, I stick to Shell if I can help it. If I had a Cheveron around me that would be my first choice. |

where to buy locally?
I live in Boston metro west (BMW) and tried to find either the Castrol SLX or
the Mobil 1 ESP months ago and *none* of the eight places I checked had either one. Some of them had never even heard of these oils. Does anyone know where these oils can be found in the greater Boston area? Thanks! |
