Cleaning engine bay

i was thinking maybe taking my car to the dealership so they can clean my engine bay and leave it as new, but then i was like hey i should do it myself. So i was wondering if i use a regular water hose, will that work or will that make any damages? and what else would i need?

Cover your alternator with plastic, do not get that thing wet. Just don't flood the engine bay.

Yes, plastic bag, any exposed air filters. Cover exposed headlight wires with electrical tape for good measure.
