Majority of Europe imports crude oil, the dollar is currently week against most currencies. I can tell you for definate that in France the percentage rise in fuel prices is the same as the UK, despite the still cheaper fuel prices. Their diesel is £1.12 per litre and unleaded at £1.16. Obviously they are NOT taxed as heavily as us judging by their diesel prices

Because their Government know they would not get away with it as they would all strike.

Some European countries have a stabilising policy where they reduce fuel duty if prices go up too fast. Of course, that would never happen here.

Indeed that is true, in fact here the government reaps in even more ££££ due to proportionate increases on VAT revenue!!!!! Unlike duty, VAT is a percentage of the price, so the higher, the better for HM government!!

Apparently the reason for the growing disparity in prices is that low sulphur 'light' crude oil is getting more expensive than other types. This is the preffered raw material for diesel and it's pushing up the price. Other factors are a massive hike in demand in China since the recent earthquake.

I heard a guy on radio 4 last week from a petroleum magazine who felt that the supply of this kind of oil had peaked (ie it will only reduce in future because of limited stocks and cost of extraction, regardless of changes in demand).

He offers some good insights into "peak oil", the orginal theory works well for "easy oil" but doesn't take account of the harder to extract oil which can be accessed as the price increases or tech advances allow it's extraction.

So when "peak oil" arrives, prices might stabalise at a new level and then stay there as canadian shale etc becomes viable.

I think fridge prices have been pretty stable these last few years.

The quality brands hold their value as well. A well sorted 3 year old bosch is still worth 50% of the list price.

Of course Bosch are 'A' rated as well - more energy efficient. What about dishwashers then?

It seems SMEG's with ice dispensers even appreciate in value... I can't get one for love nor money...
