Yes it's recommended you use 98 RON in them.

No it will run on 95 just fine.

I try and use super when available and it does feel slightly sharper, but it doesn't really mind 95 that much.

Why wouldn't you run any premium car on the best petrol you can? Especially an M3?!! Why pay tens of thousands of pounds to save a few quid at the pump every week?

I have filled mine up with 95 once, when I could get 98 and it idled rougher and spits and farts about a very low RPM. It doesn't make a lot of difference once up and running. I image the knock sensors just retard the timing back a little to compensate.

As per Jimpom really, if you need to save £4 per fill. You need to change your car for something else.

I agree with the sentiment, and do use 98, but the answer to the op's question is mine will run on 95 just fine.

They'll run just fine on 95 or less probably, but you need super to get to the best from such a high revving engine.

Smoothness aside, on a N/A engine it will suffer at all revs, but more so above 6krpm with 95 ron because the ECU can't maintain the kind of ignition advance really required to operate efficiently above that speed without detonation, so it has to use less ignition advance, thus the torque will tail more rapidly, reducing power output at all revs but more so higher up of course.

This is even more so in a 335i, where evolve have dyno'd differences of 40bhp between 95ron and Vmax99

Vmax FTW!

I find V Power much less beneficial in the M over the 335i. As you might expect

I only have a lowly 335i and I still always run that on V-Power. Runs smoother, feels like it pulls harder and I get a slight increase in mpg which offsets the few pence per litre difference in price. If I changed to an M3 I wouldn't use anything less to be honest either.

Any high performance engine is susceptible to det when pushing on, yes modern ECU's can retard the timing to avoid problems but then you loose power and the possibilty of causing damage to the engine is still there. This is a car which will then no doubt be sold on as "one careful owner"

Why would you spend thousands on a car like an M3 to then scrimp what amounts to a few quid a week on petrol? Also what else will the owner be scrimping on?

Sorry but questions like this about premium high perfomance cars completely baffle me??

Well said.

You know there will be folks putting Asda engine oil in their M3 somewhere near you. "99p a litre ya know...."

check the handbook and the fuel flap...it will run on 95 no bother at all but for "optimum" performance 98/99ron should be used.

V power (shell) and Momentum? iirc (Tesco) are the one's to use, BP Ultimate is marginaly better than normal unleaded with regards to horsepower figures and knock threshold.

At no point did I say I would run it on normal petrol, but it was simply a question as to whether it was essential to run it on 98/99, which I was expecting to be the answer to be honest.

Sorry for baffling you...

Depends if it is a turbo M-car, or not?

Not according to BMW, as per the handbook mate

Will obviously be more beneficial on boosted engines, but still requiered for high performance (high compression) engines to get maximum output.
