Turn traction control off, much easier to judge what the car is doing. Works for me anyway.

Do you go fully off - long press or just the first step? Starting to "experiment" with the car now I've got used to the 200bhp power hike over my old E39!

I have to say the gritters are doing a fantastic job so far this year!

Lets see how they cope today.

It's just light snow forecast around here (Sheffield) so I've turned out in my car rather than pinching my wife's FWD Touran. Just took it steady on the side roads this morning and switched to Eco Pro so no unnecessary revving and the auto box choosing a higher gear whenever possible. Seems to work well.

And obviously there is proper snow chaos in many parts of the UK today but anyone would think the world was going to end. Around here there was virtual panic buying at petrol stations and supermarkets yesterday. I do wonder if some people have a basic grasp of geography. A red warning of snow in the south west doesn't mean south west Sheffield. Totley isn't going to look like something from The Day After Tomorrow. And it's Welsh Wales not Wales near Swallownest.

well I cant praise my e90 enough , finished my night shift to find her in 4 inches of snow and the griters hadn't been out . she litteraly plowed through the snow as if it was fresh air . I travelled 14 miles home and not a slip, slide or skid ! and I haven't even got winter tyres on !

I've been running winters for a few years now and down to about 5mm maybe 6mm on the wintracs

In 4 inch deep fresh snow I couldn't get up a very steep hill near me where as I could the last time it was bad. Only difference is last time it was compacted snow and ice. This time I just got wheel spin no matter what the traction setting or throttle input. Either less tread made it harder or the fresh deep snow is harder to conquer uphill. No problem on the flat and got up another similar hill with driven in snow no problem.

Surely One Press of the DTC would be better than Fully off.

This allows the brake to stop one wheel spinning directing power to the wheel with more grip. Kind of like a LSD...

Depends on whether you're a 'driving god' or not

I couldn't get up a dropped curb onto my drive earlier - that's how useless my car is in the snow. I had to reverse back and take a run up, hoping that I was going fast enough to get up the tiny incline, but not too fast that I hit the house!

Judged it perfectly. I must be one of those before mentioned driving gods.

I think BMW call it e-Diff

Obviously not as good as a proper LSD, but if it delivers even a small portion of torque to the wheel with Grip then its better than nothing..

Well a mixture of cak handed driving and 19 " alloys made for a scary moment of sliding straight out onto an empty roundabout on the way home from work. Nearly made it up home I live at the top of an estate that's built on a steep hill. Had to get the snow socks on and was impressed to get home and onto the drive. Going to go and borrow the dads petrol mk4 golf to get to work tomorrow. Onward and upwards. Stay safe folks.

I played with the tail hanging out just for fun then almost stuffed it into the gatepost getting up the drop kerb onto the driveway! Slithered sideways and had to take a breather......

Activated DTC, restricted DSC (one press of the DTC) got me home 8 miles, varying gradients. Couldnt get onto my driveway though, the drop down kerb pavement incline restricted that. Its all about forward planning and keeping up the momentum. DTC seemed to work very well, coupled with a manual box, steady low rpm clutch control and torquey 6 pot.

Managed to do a 40 mile round trip today in the snow.
No winter tyres, standard RFT (19inch) with rear tyres need changing.
Was well impressed i made it back home, especially when Egham area had 4inch snow.
