Fault Code: 2E83 Leak? or Water Pump Failure?

Short story: driving on the freeway, low coolant indicator came on, followed soon after by overheating indicator/limp mode, and eventually resulting in car shutting off. Luckily was close to home and manage to get it there.

Figured I had to simply top off the coolant but soon realize there was coolant leaking on my driveway, didn't have time to look into as I needed to get back to work.

Got home and decided before I lifted the car, I might as well scan the car since I've read the many threads about water pumps going out passed 50,000 miles, am at 50,400 miles, anyways scanned it and got this fault code 2E83: Electrical cooling pump, low-power mode.

2E83:
2E83 Elctrical cooling pump, low-power mode
Error will not cause a warning light
Error is not currently present
Test conditions have been completed
Short circuit or signal interruption

Freeze Frame Information
Event 1Odometer 81400kms 50579miles
coolant temperature OBD 96.00 °C
water pump voltage 14.50 V
water pump temperature electronics 30.00 °C
water pump power reduced 76.95 %

Event 2Odometer 81408kms 50584miles
coolant temperature OBD 120.00 °C
water pump voltage 14.70 V
water pump temperature electronics 61.00 °C
water pump power reduced 76.95 %

Event 3Odometer 81408kms 50584miles
coolant temperature OBD 123.00 °C
water pump voltage 14.80 V
water pump temperature electronics 80.00 °C
water pump power reduced 76.95 %

Kind of hoping its just a leaking hose somewhere as there's coolant all over the right tire splash guard, so is it possible this code is a result of a leak? Or should I just accept that its the water pump and those who have had theirs fail had the same code..........

If so, in replacing the water pump, would you need to replace the thermostat as well? Sorry if that sounded kind of noob just really have dealt with the issue on my past cars.

Thanks in Advance

Anyways got home and had time to finally left the car up....

Found that it was a leak that cause all the coolant spill all over my driveway, it seems the heat shield around the steering rack on the passenger side had cut into the coolant hose that connects the thermostat to the water pump

Will post pictures later if anyone request

Hopefully this hose is going to be the only issue for now....

You mean steering rack I hope. Steering column on the passenger side just doesn't make sense. Seems to me that would be a warranty issue.

I think he means it was on the passenger side OF the steering column.

thanks for the correction, but just ran out of warranty

if its just the hose for now, a $20.00 hose is not going to bother me and just pulled the hose off last night, not too bad, only took me 20 mins

@everyone else will post pics soon

Understood, but regarding the warranty, the problem was caused by defective design or workmanship prior to the warranty ending. The heatshield was cutting into the hose for quite some time I'd imagine. But you're right, it's not worth the fight for a $20 hose and an hour or so of DIY time.

Sounds like something 335i owners should check for.

sorry for late reply, here are the pictures of hose and shield hitting the hose which cause the error code and the fix was simply to replace the hose

heatshield should be bent at more of an angle so it doesnt contact the hose. that being said-once the pump has been run dry(limp mode faults for pump) it is suggested to replace the pump as it has greatly shortened the life of the pump-the coolant lubricates it.
