[Yet Another] Do I have an Oil Cooler? 2011 M-Sport 335 xDrive, with 18in Wheels

Hi All,

And yes I did search

I just sold my 2007 335i Coupe which did have an oil cooler. I just picked up a 2011 335i xDrive Coupe, M-Sport with 18in M Wheels (Style 193). I randomly checked the wheel well and didn't notice the fins / cover for the oil cooler so I was wondering if I did have an oil cooler.

So I did some research and found that the XI models had more stipulations to acquire the oil cooler than the RWD vehicles. That being said I believe I have the necessary options but still no oil cooler.

The vehicle is a 335i xDrive Coupe, M-Sport (AT). I had the 18in wheel package (Style 193) with Potenza tires. However, when I did a VIN decoder I did not notice the option for the Hi-Speed so it leads me to believe I do not have the oil cooler. Any help?

From the dealer (or click for VIN decoder report; http://www.bmwarchiv.de/vin/e620340.pdf ):

From those options you should. The easy way to check is look in your passenger side wheel well. Do you see a grille on the front fender liner? If you do you have the factory oil cooler.

Edit: just read your post more completely. It does not look like you have the increased top speed option code. This means you will not have an oil cooler. If you have looked in the wheel well already and found no grille you have confirmed it.

Yeah, I figured I didn't as I didn't notice the top speed code. Its not a huge deal not having it as I'm going to keep the car mostly stock. But was thinking PPK as I'm under warranty till 2015 and CPO till 2017, not sure if BMW will install without Oil Cooler.

On well

Thanks for the help.

They won't install either the PPK1 or PPK2 without the oil cooler. I am sure they will offer to install that too at a cost (hory chit!!)

Ugh - I'm finding lots of lite things missing with the new xDrive vehicle I picked up as opposed to my 07 335i. Hope I don't start regretting purchasing it.

It is really weird. We have almost the exact same car but yours didn't get the oil cooler. Was yours originally delivered to Canada? I have heard cars shipped there didn't have the oil coolers installed.

Nope - originally was sent to a dealership in Philadelphia.

I believe the original owner "cherry picked" options instead of buying packages to save on cost. As a result I am noticing a few conveniences which are missing.

Yeah that is odd. I have an 09 e92 335xi with nearly the same basic options, and I got an OC. I thought it always came when you got these 3 options:

sport package, 18" wheels, and (some say) summer tires.

Must look at my window sticker and check. Did you get summer tires?

I purchased the car used from a BMW dealership. It has brand new Potenza tires on it - I am not sure what originally came with the car.

But it does have the Style 193 rims with a staggered setup.

OK, I had read somewhere that to get the upgraded top speed limiter you needed to specify the summer tires + 18" (staggered) wheels (189's in my case). And you needed the limiter to get OC, but you could not separate any of that out.

You could get sport + 18" and no OC or limiter obviously.

OP, you should double check the front passenger wheel well again, or better yet, just ask your SA. I have a 2011 335xi E90 with MSPORT and just ran the VIN decoder for my car. It does not list the top speed limit option code specifically, but I do have the OC. From what I recall the OC is standard on MSPORT and SPORT. BTW, I do have the PPK installed as well.

OP, does it have paddle shifters, because I think they are the last piece of the puzzle to get the Oil Cooler.

Yup, the vehicle has paddle shifters on the M-Sport wheel.

I double checked the wheel well and there are definitely no vents. It looks completely different than my 07 with an Oil Cooler. Im 99.99% sure I don't have one...which sucks as I wanted to get the PPK.

After further reading, I noticed that in this thread there was a 'glitch' with the ZM2 M-Sport package where it was missing the 840 options which is needed for the OC. My vehicle is a 2011 ZM2 Read towards the end.

I did find this and it further confirmed I do not have an Oil Cooler, despite having M-Sport and 18in Wheels. *sigh*, I guess no PPK for me in the near future.

what is a ppk exactly? a bmw tune? because i do not have a oil cooler and you MUST get that. regardless. I have the BMS JB4 tune and run 12.8 quarter miles, no dyno but probably around 350hp. I just cant do multiple runs in a row without letting things cool down, or i mgiht run a 13.01 instead of a 12.8. (13.01 still beats the super cool bumble bee camaro SS that is ever popular in ohio)

Oil coolers don't improve your performance, just your stamina

It is BMW Performance Power Kit. BMW won't install it without having a factory Oil Cooler. I wanted my car to have some extra power, but having 1.5 years of factory warranty and 2 years of CPO I don't want to put an aftermarket tune on as I want to retain my warranty.

Thanks though!
