A little 1 series help...

Guys,

I've posted this over on 1addicts:

http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=227904

But as there's not much "traffic" over there I wondered if any of you guys/gals had/have a 1er and knew anything about this issue?

TIA.

It's possible that the cold weather is affecting the lubricating properties of the gearbox oil, hence why getting into reverse gear is becoming difficult when the gearbox is cold. It might be that your friend needs the oil changing, although it would seem odd that it affects her car and not noticeably many others using the same product. Perhaps the gear selector forks are worn ??? Whatever it is, the dealer needs to inspect the gearbox itself, not just take it for a test drive. Besides, once the car gets to the dealer the gearbox oil is already warm so it would show no symptoms then...

Not had any complaints from my sister regarding hers, nor experienced anything when borrowing it.

Oil being thicker when cold makes the bulk rings harder to mesh, it's not uncommon, my Wife's Focus is bad when cold.

Clutch drag/stick when cold, and after the car has been standing, also exacerbates reverse selection problems as reverse is the lowest gear by a mile and thus the gear will be harder to engage if the input shaft is rotating.

If mine won't easily go into reverse, then just put it in 2nd then quickly back to reverse.

Same applies when 1st is sticky in the morning on most manual boxes IMO.

I don't understand this. Assuming the engine is idling then the lower gears (or at least the syncro hubs thereon) will be easier to engage as they will turning slower on the output shaft?
