its not just here, bmwowner.com has had a spell of scammers etc, they insist on 100 posts before having access to sell goods too, the admin team can only do so much.

use your common sense people, pay by paypal goods only, gifting does not offer you any protection. tough shit if the seller has to pay 2%, factor this in your price, this is a free site, if you dont like having to pay 2% go and sell it on ebay to the great unwashed and see what happens.

like a few guys have said, have a little check list:

selling memeber - are they a noob? do they have lots of posts? are they just bullshit posts to make them selves look good?

transaction - paypal goods or cash on collection only. bank transfer and paypal gift offer you zero protection.

Other - get land line number, home address, work address etc whatever you can. what info would you like if you got scammed?

If it does go tits up - contact an admin, they wont be able to get your money back, but they can help protect everyone else by banning the user, IP etc.

Use your head, lifes old saying "if it looks too good to be true, it probably is!"

Stay safe people. ;-)

But the guy who bought them had posted before you to say he had sent a pm - IMHO it is fairly obvious he was interested and was infront of you in the que so furry muff?

If I am interested in buying something I will post on the thread, pm at the same time and even email if possible to try and contact the seller and do a deal before I am beaten to it. Also people often list stuff for sale in several places so how do you police the que then?

When selling it is difficult as there are so many time wasters on forums, so if you over comit yourself to one person who turns out to be a time waster then you may have lost a genuine purchaser in that time...

Some you win and some you lose...

your throwing your dummy out as you were too late in posting your interest.
if you had opened your eyes and looked at the thread you would have seen a p.m was sent and replied to.
Do you think you can come in and jump the que.
you was in line for second chance offer as ebay would phrase it and it would have been up to you to accept or decline.
i know were not on ebay here but the thread was run fairly and i also think i stated someone had first dibs.
youre not forced to buy anything on here and the post was there for everyone to see.
YOU WERE TOO LATE!!!!!

thanks jaystee for the fair comment

I posted a for sale thread on the US, 1 Series and M3 forums for a Electronic Performance Steering Wheel and am selling it to the first person who asked me for paypal address. A couple have missed out as it sold to the 5th person to PM me while they were thinking about it or requesting more pics, asking additional questions etc.

I posted on more than one forum to generate more interest. Just becuase someone puts "PM Sent" doesnt mean they have bought it or have first dibs, I will sell to whoever I feel is reliable and wants to proceed quickest

Another thing I find is that people are scared to pick up the phone these days. If you see something you want the fastest way is usually to post/pm and ask for the sellers number or give yours and ask for a call. It is so much faster to do a deal on the phone than toing 'n froing with emails/posts/pm's and usually avoids missunderstandings...

Steady on, there's no need for that attitude - I'm not having a go at you or the thread. Its just a perfect example of what people have been saying in this particular thread.

Of course I saw the previous post, but what help is 'PM sent' to anyone? You were selling 2 items - am I supposed to be psychic?

If the post had said they wanted the item, I wouldn't have posted and wasted your and my time. What's the need for secrecy?

Ah deja vous, eh...

Very clearly 'pm sent' means someone's interested, but it doesn't mean they've committed to buy at all and to state that 'it's obvious they're in front' isn't the smartest thing to say is it.. It's basically calling 'bagsy' on the sale without committing to buy - why shouldn't someone who's prepared to purchase unconditionally feel aggrieved at being used as a back-up?

WRT to future sales, posting to say you'll buy subject to some questions or conditions is perfectly reasonable isn't it? Or is that not Secret Squirrel enough for some??

I appologise for the attitude i took it the wrong way and have posted a new thread which i hope will clear up past issues.
You did post the link to my thread which i thought was a fair one as i clearly posted that i had replied to a p.m.
As we all try to look out for each other on here rather than make enemies i have tried to be more clear in the new thread with my items for sale.

Fair enough, I didn't mean to imply you did anything wrong. Its just the rules of the forum we think need clarification.

As a seller, you are absolutely entitled to sell to whomever you choose, whether they replied first, are local to you, have good feedback, or you just like the colour of their car - sellers can do what they like of course.

Its just the immediate jump to PM that annoys people. Its not like we're buying weapons grade plutonium or dodgy porno mags here!
Its like kids at school passing notes under the desk, grow up people.

What we end up with are old threads full of 'PM sent' and no one knows whether the item is sold or not. And people like me that won't bother bidding anymore because we may or may not have been beaten to it by a PM that we may or may not know about.

I don't see the problem - the buyer posted/pm'd before you did?

Edit: didn't see this thread was 2 pages long....
...IMO nothing wrong with pm, I think you are just frustrated at missing out, which is understandable but hardly the sellers fault!

First dibs is the way it should be done imho. Therefore if someone gets in; Fair enough.

Nobody's arguing that Dave, the debate is over the method not the timing.

Fine. I'll ellaborate If I post in a topic "pm sent" it is obvious I am interested. And if I post in the topic "pm sent" before anyone else registers interest: Then I get first dibs.

Not difficult imho...

I personally don't like cryptic "YHPM" posts as it can kill interest. If I PM about something being sold on any forum I put up a reply saying "PM'd regarding (item)" if multiple items are for sale or "PM'd regarding price" if I'm making an offer. That way other forum users have some clue about what's going on.

I'd always PM a seller before replying in a thread. My take has always been as MEGA puts it "you snooze you lose"

The point I made earlier on which your scenario doesn't fit, is if you post "pm sent" and someone posts behind you "I'll take it", it's surely understandable if they aren't happy when they find out it's gone to the first person who 'baggsied' (poss new word, copyright just in case!) the spot in the queue when they made the first actual offer? Not seeking to prolong the argument, just helping people see both sides.

Unless I'm missing it, in which case I'm going to post "pm sent" on every single new thread in the Classifieds now and then decide if I want to buy it or not once I've reserved my place at the front of the queue.

PM Sent means nothing! PM Sent could mean you are trying to get negotiate a lower price.
If I advertise something and someone pm's me trying to get the price lowered (which I have no problem with btw) but in the meantime, someone else pm's me with an offer of full asking price, its tough titty on the first guy, he didnt snooze, but he still lost.
If however, I agree a price, then someone else comes along after offering full asking price, its my loss, i'll honour the agreed price

swings and roundabouts and all that.....

cant see why this thread has gone two pages long... its simple... seller decides who he wants to sell to, regardless of PM's, offers, posting in sale thread.

then its seller responsibility to update thread as soon as item is sold, so everyone knows.

Right. So instead of saying "PM sent" everyone should say "PM sent as I want to buy your item"..

What. Rather than "PM sent because I do thusly believe that sexual intercourse with your sister would be pleasing" ???

Why the fuck else are they sending a PM in a for sale thread. And besides any of this the seller can do whatever the hell they like.. So...

Semantic bollocks and frankly this topic is ridiculous.

/Thread.
