+1 on this.

335i and 330Ci with winters was definitely much better than my old Audi A4 with Quattro on all seasons.

+2.

Also coming from a Quattro A4 with winters. Quattro was great for starting in deep snow and helped in faster corners. In other winter driving situations, such as stopping (probably being the most important part of winter driving), the 335i with winters is not far off.

I spent the dough, too. I went with BMW Style 188 and Blizzak LM-25 XL. They're great! Taking the wheels to the tire shop I can only transport 2 at a time in my 335i. It would take too long and it nicks you time and again, $100 twice a year. I'd rather change the wheels myself anyway. And keep my style 189s out of winter danger.
