CIC Retrofit USB port handle iPhones/mp3?

Can the cic retro fit USB port in the glove compartment handle USB drives with mm3s on them? What about charging/playing music off an iPhone?

No, it's not.... That USB port in the glove box is designed to updating the map data on the iDrive and loading mp3s to the internal hard drive.

It cannot play mp3s directly from the drive or play music off an iPhone. You need a Combox for all of that, which comes with a USB port for your center console.

So if i took MP3s from a thumb drive, the usb port from the CIC in the glove box could copy them to the hard drive for the CIC (going to upgrade it to an SSD later) and then play them from that hard drive/ssd ?

That's correct, you'll have an option to import them to the internal hard drive of the CIC and you can play them directly from the headunit.

Thanks for your help, would you also know how to go about swapping the hard drive for an SSD? Thinking about a Samsung 840 Evo 250GB. How much space does the BMW stuff take ?

Depends on which model of CIC you have.

Also, if I remember correctly, the CIC units have a IDE hard drive, so you can't just swap in an SSD without finding a way to convert the interface to IDE, negating the advantage of the SSD's throughput.

Honestly, I don't think it really buys you anything, but check out some of the older threads about replacing the hard drive in the CICs.

There's different models of the CIC ? Apparently they have PATA connectors. I might just stick with the hard drive, just going to see how the speeds are.
