And even more important than snow tires people need to slow the F@&k down. A lot of the mayhem in this video could have been avoided if the vehicles had been moving at a slower speed.

The biggest "trick" to winter driving is to take it slow, I pretend I'm driving in molasses - every motion I make from turning to braking and accelerating is done slowly and smoothly. I've driven sports cars most of my life and I never bother with getting winter tires. I've managed some brutal midwest winters here without any major issues on only all seasons (in good condition). About to enter this winter with a fresh set of Continental DWS on - I have no worries.

On a side note, this seems like a pretty light winter storm to be causing so many problems. Do they not get much of this in Seattle?

I don't think that's just snow. It looks like it was so cold that the roads have been covered by a layer or ice (and then snow on top). If it's light snow it wouldn't have been so bad. Ice on the other hand...

Living near Seattle, I always laugh when the people from the flat Midwest chime in about this.....

Yes, most of the drivers are clueless, but I guarantee that even those from Minnesota would be sliding down that hill.

Here is why:
The ground in Seattle never really gets cold, so when the snow first starts to fall, it melts on contact. But as more snow falls, that initial wet layer from the melting snow turns to ice.

Now you've got an ice layer underneath the snow. Snow actually has a decent amount of traction, but as more cars go over it, it compacts and is basically as slick as ice at that point. Now you've got compact snow on top of a solid layer of ice. Without spiked tires or chains (I doubt studs would help), you are sliding down that hill.

Combine those conditions with significant hills, and you've got a winter slip-n-slide. We have some streets that exceed a 25% grade.

According to Andy King, civil-engineering specialist with the city Department of Engineering, Queen Anne North between Prospect and Highland Drive has an 18.5 percent grade. But the city has far steeper streets.

Most vertical of all is a block-long street in the Phinney Ridge neighborhood: Northwest 60th Street between Second and Third avenues Northwest has a 28 percent grade. What's more, the street has never been paved. The grading dates back to 1908.

Two other standouts are East Valley Street between 25th and 26th avenues East, which has a 25 percent grade, and Fourth Avenue North between Newell and Dexter streets, also 25 percent.

The cities around here will routinely close roads when it starts to snow, but some drivers ignore the signs, or they don't get put up quickly enough.

Notice how the one car (the white SUV, MDX?), even from a dead stand still, starts to slide down the hill? Can't go much slower than nearly stopped. So even going slow isn't necessarily going to get you safely up or down that hill.


I did laugh when the bus took out the bus stop sign. The irony was just too much....

I think it was some ice with some snow on top of it, thats the only explanation. Still though, slowing down and proper tires would have made a huge difference. There is a reason its law in Germany (and maybe other places in Europe) to have winter tires on your car in winter. They make it so my car isnt an extra large hockey puck when its snowing/icy or just plain cold out.

The thing about the white MDX though was spinning the tires, feather that thing. Feather feather feather. And the people locking them up going into the stop sign, yea, too fast but PUMP those breaks, locking it up does nothing unless you have anti-lock brakes and that only does so much.

That camry was going WAAAYYYYYY too fast though, looked like it was going too fast for just wet roads.

I grew up in Washington State (17 years), but on the other side of the cascades. It's all about how you drive. You don't need snow tires in Washington. Then I moved to the northeast (been here 8 years) and I still didn't have snow tires for the longest time. I've driven a 1996 Lumina Van, 2000 Honda Civic, 1995 Mazda MX6, 2001 Acura TL, 2006 325ci, and my 2007 328i with no snow tires. I finally got a set of snow tires last year because I was planning to get summer rims and tires.

Just take it easy and you'll be ok. Don't be the jackass that thinks his SUV can handle snow cause it's AWD. I remember this one time this Jeep flew by me and a bend was coming up. I said to myself that dude is gonna flip over driving like that. When I came around the bend he was swerving all over the road. I was surprised he got it under control and didn't flip.

That is ice without a doubt. There are much steeper hills around me and I never have that problem. Snow tires won't do much for ice. Ice is a whole other story.

I think most of those people don't understand the laws of physics.

The first car turned the wheel in the completely wrong direction causing it to spin around. The white SUV jammed his throttle, which is what I'd imagine an ignorant driver to do.

Certain states that have road conditions like this at any point of the year should introduce a mandatory car control class where you learn to control your vehicle beyond the limits of traction or in low traction situations.

I lived in St. Louis for 40 years and the last 4 here in Seattle. Yeah, there are some steep hills in the midwest. In Seattle, damn near EVERY street is a steep hill and many are off camber as well.

As another poster mentioned, it's ice on the bottom and then compact snow which is basically another layer of ice. To compound that, unlike the midwest where the street departments put more salt and chemicals on the road than snow itself, the reverse is true here. Thanks to the tree-huggers and their concern for the salmon, if we're lucky we get a little sand tossed on top of the ice and maybe a shot of chemical de-icer that does nothing.

Easy to arm chair quarterback, but it's another thing to experience it live and in person.

FWIW, my E90 335i navigated the mess without issue but it certainly had its moments.
