I was wondering the same - looks like per the homepage article the electronics don't cost more since both products are marked at $1199 but the labor charge would probably be higher for cars with MSD80. i asked my SA too and will let you know what he says.

Is there any other benefit to MSD81 over MSD80? Does this affect the way we can code and tune our cars?

My reply from another thread asking about the dme...

Yup, the kit for the N54s w/ MSD80 produced up to 3/2008 includes the newer MSD81 DME. We have to order this kit by vin (so be sure to include it w/ your order) and it ships directly from Germany. Not sure how that will affect the installation time or price - you'd have to contact your local BMW Service dept. for an installation quote.

If you are referring to the air duct kit required for version 2, it is typically sold separately - however we've bundled it into the price on our site!

There is if you want the software - it's required.

Well after some further inquiry, it is still not clear if it comes with a new DME or is simply software for the older DME - but it looks like most likely they ship a rmfd MSD81 that needs to be installed and then the software needs to be installed on top of that. I am having the parts guy at the local dealer order this up and we'll see what actually comes in.

I already confirmed this above in post # 26.

If the version 1 is just software how does Tischers ship it to me. Don't I have to go to the dealer to have it installed anyway?
