Hi there, I've got an E92 330d Msport plus with the 19 inch wheels on. Love the car, it's my 3rd BM and the best yet!! Not had any problems with uneven wear at all on this car until it was flagged up to me by the main dealer yesterday that it was wearing the inside of the tyres (particularly the fronts) whilst in for a service. I thought it was odd as I am used to bmws wearing the outside of the front tyres. Anyway I dismissed it initially as standard dealer talk trying to con me out of money, but now looking at the fronts I have noticed that they have worn the inside of the tyre quite significantly in a way that I've never seen before, I've attached a couple of pics has anyone had wear like this before and if so what did you do to rectify it? Dealer wants £200 for some for of alignment/tracking??
Any help gratefully received!! Thanks Sam |

Get it on a Hunter and have the alignment done.

Oh and £200 is a rip off just find a decent tyre place with a laser tracking set up.
Expect to pay about £80

Ok, I may get shot at for this, but from other threads I've seen over time, the kind of wear you fronts are showing, is down to a combination of run-flats and under inflation.
the theory runs along the lines of, when you under inflate a normal tyre, the walls flex out, the centre gives, and you get accelerated wear on the outer 1/4s. When you under inflate a run flat, however, although the centre still gives, the walls don't, so a very, very heavy load is put on the tyre edge, leading to the wear exhibited in the pictures. It's usually the inner edge that suffers because of the camber setting used on M-Sport cars. The recommendation is to use the higher figures shown on the door pillar. Usually of course, most owners with 19" wheels on M-Sport cars run at low pressures to try and improve the ride, hence the problem. |

It looks like incorrect toe wear to me.
The question ofcourse is why is the toe incorrect, as it doesnt change itself. Either its had some replacement parts at some point and hasnt been properly aligned after, or something has become worn out and allowed the toe to move around (ie a worn balljoint for instance) or its had a skelp off something and something has bent. Its worth getting everything checked over carefully. Sticking it on an alignment machine and fixing the alignment is one thing, but if somethings worn out your wasting your money and if somethings bent it needs replaced! |

Thanks for all your help guys!! I'm based near Manchester, so would be looking for somewhere around there really.
Is a Hunter the same as KDS alignment? The dealer was proposing KDS, that's what they wanted £200 for, interesting to hear that it can be done for much cheaper!! I'll check the tyre pressures and come to you on that one, yes they are run flats-Bridgestones, but interestingly the alloys were replaced under warranty in February (like for like). They put the same tyres back on as there was plenty left on them, do you think that might have contributed?? |

Just pop to a local Kwik Fit if they have a Hunter system, think its about £45 or so. That's where I took mine when I first got the car and had the tyres changed, the previous set of tyres had uneven wear too. Now 24k miles later all the tyres have worn evenly and the handling is spot on.
One thing to note if your going to get it aligned on Hunter, is to make sure you stand with the guy while he puts in the settings of what car you have, as you'll be surprised at the differences in alignment between models. If they have no clue to what model your car is, they will just pick a general 3 series sedan and go with it. Also make sure they put the tubs of weight in the car and stack them up on the seats. I've seen some garages for some reason stack these weights in the engine bay. |

Even £120 is excessive. I pay £60 for a full custom alignment on the latest Hunter machine (I make up my own specs on the spot sometimes based on the manufacturer files).
Having said, that, if you need toe+camber on all 4 corners then £120 is a pretty typical price from what I've seen.

I've just paid £77 including VAT for a full Hunter 4 wheel alignment on my F10 at Nigel Langs Garage, Bolton. This included adjustment of front toe and rear camber (2 adjustments). Nigel is 100% on top of his game. After the alignment he test drove and carried out adjustments 3 times to ensure the steering wheel angle was correct.
I rang him on Tuesday and the car was booked in for Wednesday 12.30PM. http://www.nigellangsgarage.co.uk/
