Yes , you are right I did not consider that is what is lighting whole area around :/ damn... I guess I will go for full white look rather than play with coloring my dials.Maybe to put a piece of red vinyl or something else .
Thanks for enlightening me

You're welcome. Even colored vinyl won't work. You'd need to male a new gauge face and attach it to the diffusor if you wanted to change the gauge color independent of the needles

So, I completed the DIY. Picture below. I think it looks great in car, and I painted my needles Red as you can see.

1. From my experience, this was way longer then an hour. Took me about 4-5 hours. Reason being, I have never soldered a day in my life, but at least that lets you guys know who have never either that its very doable. I was just extremely nerviness around the board, + trying to figure how to solder as I went.

2. The DIY is great, other then learning the soldering part.

3. I had a lot of lights that wouldn't light up at first. Getting the OLD ones off, was extremely easy. Getting the news one on, is what took the longest. however, once I figured out why the lights weren't coming on (my bad soldering) I got all of them work.

4. Now that I have done it, I think it looks great and glad I did it!

5. Does anyone know how I can replace the little LCD screen thing where I have the "run lines" showing? That would be great to get that fixed now that I got my new look going on.

Looks great! You just have to get another LCD screen from a used cluster. It'll plug right in.

New to the forum.
I tried this last night, to start with I only removed the two fuel LEDs. I replaced them with new white ones but they won't work. I removed and re-soldered them a few times and they look to be have a good connection. Is there any chance I could have damaged the circuit board? All the others light up, just the two I replaced. I marked the - side when I removed them so they are on the correct way. Is there a way of checking they have a good connection with my multimeter? Also is each dial wired in series? So if one doesn't work they both don't?
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Try some new ones. Too much heat will kill them. You can check them with a multimeter in the diode position. Looks like -lll but the ls get smaller to the right. I doubt they're in series but I haven't really looked that far into it.

I seem to also have a bad connection/faulty harness on the rear of my cluster, I keep getting -40°C outside temp warning and my mpg, range, etc is just blank. If I fiddle with the wire then my cluster ranges from fully working to 'electronics failure' or nothing at all. Managed to get it in half working so I haven't messed again since. I have Approved Used BMW warranty but with the fuel LEDs out I don't want them to go rooting then blame me for the fault

I would look at the wires going into the connector, the pins themselves and the connector on the pcb. It's probably an easy fix.

Thanks for the tutorial, it was used in conjunction with others threads to help me complete my cluster mod. The color scheme I chose is slightly different than most I have seen and I wanted to share so future modders can use it as a reference.

Where most people go with the white face/rings and red needles, I really wanted to maintain the needle visibility during the day. I also darkened the inner KPH markings and painted secondary gauges and some markings red while leaving the important items like the main MPH markings and needles white.

I am happy with it except for the needle LEDs, I swapped them to 450mcd 1206 SMD LEDs and the light output is below par IMO, the LEDs I chose have a diffused lens and are not perfectly aligned to shine into the needles (my own fault). I will remedy this down the road hopefully with some 1,000+mcd dome top LEDs that are small enough to fit under the needle motors.

Until then, this is what it looks like in the day and at night.
Evan

Looks great! Did you peel the overlay off and paint the backside or did you paint the diffuser?
