Exact difference btw JB3 and J 4??

Ok...so probably a stupid and old question. I just bought a JB3 off a friend and am looking up info on it but all that comes up is JB4 stuff or JB4 (stage 3) info.

Is that what the JB3 actually is? A JB4 (stage 3) and the JB4 most ppl have these days is a JB4 (stage 4)??

I haven't had this car for too long and am new to all the tuning/mod. I'm planning on putting this JB3 in this weekend along with a DCI

The JB3 and JB4 modules are completely different; the boards are not the same. Ive had both and the JB4 is more advanced and has better maps. Power is much smoother and all the settings are better controlled with the the JB4. The Map 5 auto tune is really good on the JB4.

Also, the JB3 is no longer supported with firmware from BMS.

I highly suggest you pay the upgrade fee to go to the JB4, either G4 or G5 boards (latest version), it's that noticeable.

He wanted $150 for it. I paid $190 for the JB3 and a BMS DCI.
Good deal?

I know the boards are different and ill def be looking into the upgrade when I have a little more cash flow. Christmas always hurts!
Is the JB4 more likely to throw codes...? I know it's more advanced and everything. The car is my daily driver and I don't track it. (Yet) I always run 93 octane. Was just planning on running JB3 map 3-4.

The JB3 is obsolete now and no longer compatible with newer software versions from BMW. So it may throw check engine lights, not run right, etc. I would throw it under the bed until you can afford the JB4 upgrade.

I drive an '08 e90...you think it'll be incompatible. Friend I'm buying it from said it never threw a code for him running it on map 4.

JB3 is obsolete.

They are both "stage 3"

JB4 is a more sophisticated board and uses CANbus to communicate with the car. To keep things simple it provides safer and more consistent power then the JB3 and its full a many other features.

Their website description really says it all:

"Now shipping with JB4 featuring 5x the processing power, 2x the memory, more robust signal conditioning, and integrated CANbus. Our new CANbus module allows the JB4 to communicate with your vehicle like never before. New features include code reading/deleting, optional in dash boost, timing, air/fuel, shift light, and IAT gauges, autotuning, a buttery smooth new CANbus based integrated boost control system, map switching on the fly via steering wheel controls, built in downpipe fix, hot/cold oil temperature protection, progressive methanol integration, water pump remapping, gear dependent boost control/traction assist, and much more to come with free firmware updates uploaded using a windows laptop (or mac w/ windows emulator) and BMS USB cable."
