iPhone dock in lighted sunglass tray
Hi all,
I just wanted to share the installation I did for my iPhone.. I basically ran the iPod Y-cable under the center console (using USB and audio extension cables), connected to a cablejive dock connector which goes thru a hole in the bottom of the sunglass tray. Sunglass tray was installed with help of FrankoQ DIY post here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32678 The only change is I placed the lights on the tray cover.

Looks like the lid is supporting it. Pretty slick.

Thanks, that's correct. The dock itself also holds it pretty snuggly. The dock is at an angle were it slightly presses the phone to the lid...

When using as an iPod, that is listening to music in my library, then yes steering wheel controls are available. When listening to other sources such as Pandora, then you need to control the iphone directly... the only irreversible modification is the hole for the dock connector and the lights which were relocated to the lid ... in my case I changed the cigarette lighter tray for the sunglass tray so I could go back to the cigarette tray and reverse the mod

Longhorn335, I like your solution. So, you extended the Y-Cable and connected to the cablejive Dock connector. Is this the dockstubz product? How did you secure this so that it doesn't move while cornering? I like putting the lights in the tray door. Good job!

Where did you get the sunglass tray replacement for the smoker's package(small tray and lighter)? I'd do the same thing, I think. Also, how did you secure the 30-pin connector? Is it plenty secure?
Again, it looks great. Also, I just went out to my ar and noticed that there is no USB hookup, just the cigarette lighter/power supply next to the AUX in. How do I get a USB socket there instead? New unit? If new unit, where is the best place to get it. Sorry, noob questions from a noob. Last edited by shaytanabyad; 09-22-2011 at 08:55 AM.. |

It will work exactly as it works when you connect the iphone to the usb port inside the center console. Really all I did was add an extension (and a few connectors) from the center console to the sunglass tray

The 30 pin connector is very secure, I used the cablejive connector: http://www.cablejive.com/products/dockStubz.html I glued the connector to the dock (using gorilla glue, from underneath so it is not visible) The car came with the ipod connection, which is an option. if you only have the aux but not the usb then that means you dont have ipod connectivity. I dunno if it is a simple retrofit or not, but you would need to retrofit the ipod option in order to do something like this I assume...

1 cablejive dockstubz 1 dockXtender 6ft cable (http://www.cablejive.com/products/dockXtender.html) 1 cigarette lighter to miniusb power adaptor (connects to the dockstubz, so the iphone charges correctly). The adaptor is hard wired to what used to be the power source for the cigarrete lighter in the old tray. Gorilla glue, to attach the dockstubz to the tray A few inches of wire to extend the 2 lights to the tray cover lid The dock holds it snugly enough so it doesn't move to the sides when cornering, and the lid prevents movement back and forth...

I love this! I will do this mod when the iPhone 5 comes out - this will be the first thing I do.
How did you attach the dock connector to the sunglass tray? I would use epoxy probably but want to know what you used. For those of us WITHOUT an iPod/iPhone hookup, like myself, we can use something like this http://www.amazon.com/Kensington-Cha.../dp/B0031U1AU0 to hook it up to the aux-in. So there's one simple dock connector and then run the 3.5mm and the usb cable through the console to the aux in and power jack in the console (use extensions as necessary) I plan to do this next month once I get an iPhone 5, I'll post pics and such once I'm done Nice work! Looks very clean - I especially like the angle that it's at. |

Bullet: I did a similar setup in my e90 with the sunglass tray, but I don't see why you couldn't do it with the ashtray instead. You would have to remove the ash tray insert or drill through both the base and insert to do the install, which wouldn't be a big deal. Since the iPhone/iPod is relatively small, space isn't an issue if you do it standing up like Longhorn.

At some point I was planning to somehow mount the iPhone in a horizontal position then abandoned the idea. By then I already had the sunglass tray in hand that's why I swapped it. I forgot about that..

dock
I just added the stock Apple dock into my car. Ran the aux in and usb power back to the arm rest location. A little bit of work with the dremel on the ashtray and the dock fits in the ashtray perfectly. Then add some 3M tape to hold it in place. The phone sits in place well.
