The Yanks can't get enough of the 335d actually even if their version is down on power an needs urea to run "properly." Just check the Yank section.

What's the power output of the Septic 335d?

Do they buy urea or have a wee and pour it into the fuel tank? Is this because of different sulphur levels or something?

I think it's a separate tank and something to do with emissions. And I think some have peed into the tank before!

My first diesel coming from a focus ST. Really impressed with the power delivery, no turbo lag to speak of, having had an STI, I know what lag is. Remapped, its also pretty fast, having given a few 330d owners a bit of a shock. It revs quite nicely up to 5.5k, so more petrol like than most other diesels. Still can't get used to town driving, but out on A roads, 6th gear is joy to still be able to overtake without having to change down, unless really on a rush.

But the cost is still rising, so my move from 20-25mpg to just shy of 40mpg is not enough, so the 320d ED is going to be a bit of a change again, hence why I've ordered lots of toys to keep me occupied sitting in traffic, rather than overtaking.

I think the 123d engine fits very nicely in the coupe, the nicest looking 1 series IMO, but I had to settle on the 5 door.

I just wonder why it's not in any used elsewhere (except the X1). My theory is, that come the facelift in 2012, we may well see it discontued.

Not sure about that, I think the 23d type engine will become more common as fuel costs continue to rise and there are more pressures on emissions etc.

It's a 2.0 twin-turbo right? Sounds great, I do think it's odd that they don't offer in the 3-series but I guess they want to prevent sales of the 25d unit from being cannibalised.

Merc, VW and others have also gone for the bi-turbo 4 pot 2.0 litre as well - seems the way forward to me.

123d does get cracking reviews. Only driven a 120d myself and even that was a lot of fun. Just too small for us.

You're probably right, it's just my musings based on the fact it hasn't crept into the 3 series (yet).

The twin turbo's certainly help with creating a very smooth power delivery. And you really can't complain with Golf GTI performance coupled with Golf diesel economy, even in standard form.

yep you definitely made the right move into a 123d, if you regularly make the trip up to trafford.

I'm a boycotter at the moment, so only done the trip once in last 2 years and got 48mpg. Before I was doing the trip every other week for home games and midweek CL ties in the ST.

Single turbo 330d is off-boost below 1700rpm.

It does. I'm not technically up on the way the 2 turbo's work, but at low revs one is working, then the other comes on stream at about 2-2.5k, but I think they are in-line rather than side by side. Not sure what difference that makes though.

But back to the conversation - I'm also a firm believer that a car should also go the way it looks. BMW's - ES or M sport can only be noticed by enthusiasts or (some) existing owners. Only the proper M's look butch enough to be 'something different'...the rest are a much of a muchness, really.

For example - I wouldn't by a A5 (probably the best mainstream coupe on the road at the moment IMO) with a 2.0 TDI engine or a Audi TT with the Diesel version - although I have heard it's a pretty good car. Then a Porche - I wouldn't buy the Cayman with a 2.7 - it would have to be the 3.2/3.6. On the opposite side of the scale - I would happily take a 7 series, A8, E-Class/S-Class in the lower end diesel models - so as long as it was powerful enough to move easily enough.

I would say that even the M cars need an enthusiast/car fan to know what they are - my wife thinks that my car looks identical to my 335i which i owned for a year - my next door neighbour told me that has ordered the same car as me...in the same colour as well - when it turned up it was a E90 320d. Most people just don't know or care that much about cars - if it looks good, is a nice colour and has the right 'badge' then they are happy.
