My Friend Is A Dead Man!!!

Like the title states, my friend is an ass hat that deserves a kick in the nuts. Roughly 4-5 days ago, my airbag/ seatbelt bulb light came on and this annoyed me. I thought that maybe it was a glitch and it would sort itself out, wrong. The next day I did a bunch of research to see what the problem could be and how much it was going to cost me. I found out it could be either the mat sensor, srs problem, a battery problem etc.

So I call up Farley (farbmw) to scan my car and see what the issue is. I throw a couple codes ( i'll post them later) and for the most part they are irrelevant to my problem ( exhaust butterfly flap code and some weird oil thermo code??) The last code to come up was a battery connection code. So I head to the trunk, lift the cover and check it out.

The day before my light came on, my freind decided to put a big ass bag of ice in my trunk and he forgot to take it out. So when i look in the battery housing there is about 3 1/2 - 4" of god damn water. I immediately go to Canadian tire and buy little hand pump to get the water out but the damage has obviously already been done. My car is out of BMW warranty but i do have a private warranty.

My question now is if i take the battery out, wipe everything down and air dry all connections and erase the code will everything be good? or do you think that there is more damage and repairs will have to be done?

I was told by farbmw that there is a new recall for our batteries and im hoping that i can take the car in under a recall and get things sorted out that way.

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. My friend knows he is going to pay for any repairs that are needed but i would rather save him the money if possible.

Thanks in advance.

My advice would be to edit your original post so that it doesn't get deleted and you avoid the inevitable drama. And then to stop blaming this on your friend.

Just say that a bag of ice was forgotten in the trunk and what the result was and then ask for advice on how to solve it. Also try posting it in the general section or the maintenance section. Here most people will only address modifications.

How did this bag of ice get into your trunk? Looks like you both forgot about it. Calm down..it's just a car and can be fixed. Do you really value your car over your friendship? If you're interested in saving him the money as you claim, offer to split the bill.

suck up the water, wipe everything down, let it air out for a long while, check the battery voltage, start it up. doesn't sound like too big of an issue so far. you had a puddle of water in your trunk so i would have expected much worse. i think once everything is dry it will make a big difference. good luck

yeah i'd get it cleaned up, suck all the water and try to dry it as much as possible. probably likely that it's going to have some problems but worth a try.

sucks man, i feel for ya.

There's nothing in that corner besides the battery. Reset the code and you should be good to go.

Just be sure to wipe clean everything or else there's a heavy risk or corrosion on the battery's poles.

It could had been worse. Cant imagine the fireworks if water would had submerged the whole battery.

My advice: Dont be mad at your friend. We all slipped in our life. Help him helping you by making the first steps and have a couple beers together while cleaning this mess.

You'll both laugh about it one day. That would be a killer story to tell at his wedding; or yours.

Thanks for all the help people, it is much appreciated. I am still good friends with the guy hence the reason i reffer to him as my friend in the post. I was pissed off but i know he didnt do it on purpose. As for the people who say it's my fault for not monitoring my car 24 hrs a day, i trust some of my friends with my life, never mind my car so i never thought it would happen

I had a friend do the same thing once... except it was a cooler with a bottle of leaking margarita in there. Leaked all over my stock XM radio receiver in the trunk of my g37. Wiped it down... took it to the dealer, said it was broken and had them replace it. No questions asked.

He gets all bent out of shape over a freaking ice bag in his trunk imagine what an IED will start! Armageddon.

Ok jokes aside, I think once it dries there will be no lasting issues. Now if the electronics tray that attaches to the battery's top had been soaked, I fear we might have had to go looking for the said friend's headless torso in lake Ontario because that would have been FUBAR and loads of $$$ to fix.

Hmmmmm......I have to disagree on this one. That plastic thing on top of the battery is nothing but a power distribution block, and a very over-engineered one @that!!! (typical BMW though). I replaced my OEM battery with a much smaller (physically) red top optima, still 760 CCA. When installing the optima, there was no way the power block was going to fit on the new battery in it's current form, so I took it apart. Literally, it's 2 pieces of plastic that sandwich a thin piece of metal that distributes power from the + post to a few connectors running to who knows where. I chucked the plastic halves, cut 2 pieces of high density foam, then sandwiched the thin metal plate between the foam. 1 piece of foam sits on the top of the battery, and the top piece is held in place by the cross brace for the OEM battery. By taking that distribution block apart, it gave me tons of ways to make it work on just about any battery. Really, there is nothing to that thing. It just looks really complicated, but it reallly couldn't be any simpler!! I know this is off topic, but if the OP was thinking about putting a different battery in his car, don't be scared to make that distrbution block work for you!! (keep in mind I've been outta warranty for quite some time now. :0))

UPDATE: So it has been taken in to the stealership and they uncovered the problem.
1.) There is corrosion on the st terminal
2.) The battery wiring harness had to be replaced

With Service, parts and rental fee's, everything came up to just under $800 Canadian dollars. I got the money from my retard frtiend and all is good.

BTW: i had an X1 for a rental, thought it would be gay, it was amazing.
