Op great write up! Just finished it and I can finally log my data...cable length doesn't need to be anything crazy I have the 6 ft and the cable is long enough to reach the back of the center console in my e92

Op, great DIY. This is super easy, especially with the pictures. I didn't even disconnect the ECU or the Proceed. There is enough slack in the wires to pull them out and put them off to the side. The only thing that was different for me was that the two bolts under the glove box were a T15 Torx instead of a T8. I have a '08 E92, so maybe it's different.

Just used this DIY. Thanks for the pointers.

Can say without a doubt on an E92 M3, it works as advertised

A small tip:

As the cable I needed to route was NOT a USB cable and thus pretty thin and didnt hold its shape like a USB cable does, I used a coat hanger + some tape to assist.

Worked like a charm.

Just make sure to "round" (make a U out of it) the end thats going in.

Thanks again!

I used the info here to install the BimmerTech front camera, worked like a champ! Super clean and easy! Best DIY IMA, plus the pictures were perfect! Used procedures on a 2011 e92 M3.

I am going to use this to route my Escort Passport 9500ci Radar / Shifters. I had no idea how to get firewall access. This was a life saver! Thank you very much!

I'm curious if anyone here can comment - I'm trying to do a Front PDC retrofit, and am passing the harness in question through the firewall in the same manner as the USB cable in the thread. For anyone that has a cable going into the ECU box from the engine bay (I saw mention of a front camera) - did you have to make a hole in the box, or was there another way to fish it in so that moisture isn't able to enter?

UPDATE: I decided to make a small slit in the rubber grommet that carries in other wiring and then seal it up around the harness. It routed through the opening into the footwell and worked perfectly!

That hole is the e-box fan passage. I sure hope any cable passing thru would not touch the fan blade. Otherwise the fan will not rotate and the e-box might overheat and there would be a code for e-box fan activation.
This thread has been here for years. I am sure I am just overreacting.

Somehow they're managing to avoid pushing the cable into the fan housing (there must be a break between the end of the fan housing and the tube/space they're coming through). The fan unit from the pictures I've seen is self contained with an air opening and similar in shape to a handheld hair dryer (only much smaller). Other's talk of a different hole much harder to access (which I don't have on my 07 335), so I connected my JB4 cable to JB4 and notched the top of ECU box (not the cover), wrapped it in plastic and tucked it away for future immediate use beside ECU box.
