Trackers

Moving unpleasantly on from the 'BMW's being stolen' type thread I wondered how many people had tracking units and which ones they had ??

With an E92 to protect ... which Tracker would I choose if I went down that route ?

Tracker themselves work on VHF/GPS/GSM, etc .... but you can't change it between cars
....whereas others such as SmartTrak and Cobra can be moved between cars when you sell but are 'just' GSM/GPS which seems susceptible to jammers - or do people really use these ??

I see the latest expensive offerings provide the ability to send a signal to the car to shut the engine down when it comes to a halt - and have Smart cards that detect when the owner is not moving their own car if the card is not in range .... though these units are very expensive at around £700 before subs ...

Or shall I just rely on my GAP insurance and take the hike on normal insurance if unlucky enough to have to claim ?

Ah, decisions, decisions ....

GAP - bobs your uncle

Stolen recovered counts as a claim anyway and your insurance will go up... At least with GAP you'll get all your money back and get a newer one.

you could consider one of these

mtrack

thatcham cat 7 self install giving you a wide range of possibilities not just a few that an engineer wants to put it in.

then do you want it back if some low life has ragged it from cold after nicking it

+1

If my car gets nicked I'd rather have the cash than get it back

Just so you know - adding a tracker to my car increases my insurance premium by about £180. (across the whole Admiral group)

That's odd, when I told Admiral about a tracker they reduced mine.

Just did a quick quote on Elephant.co.uk and adding a tracker onto my insurance puts it UP by £70

Its the same with aftermarket alarms as well. I once had a Clifford system fitted to a car that didn't have a Cat 1 alarm as standard. They put my premium up by about £40 IIRC (this was some time ago).

I believe the reason is - they may or may not give you a discount for extra security but they DO consider it a modification and load the premium accordingly.

So you might be getting 5% discount for having a tracker and 10% increase for declaring a modification. Depending on the insurer's view on mods vs security this will vary between insurers and indeed between cars with the same insurer.

Plus of course, they may be considering that they are insuring the value of the tracker itself as well as the car. If you specced a tracker fitted from new and the car was a total loss, you'd expect the cost of the tracker to be considered in the value, or if they were replacing the car like-for-like (as some companies do in the first year) they would have to replace your vehicle with one that also had a tracker.

I am with Admiral and fitting a Tracker makes no difference to my policy ... one way or the other ...
