Manual mode = boost in MPG?

i have an automatic, and i drive the same route 6 days a week... anyways, this week, i have been using the manual mode for the pass two days, and i noticed that my "KM left on tank" display is giving me 20-30KM more than before when i constantly use the automatic...

is this normal? and if so, is it fine if i use the manual mode daily on city driving??

If you are constantly shifting to the highest gear possible I think it's plausible. The computer is still guessing when to shift so if you shift earlier and use the same amount of throttle then I guess what you're saying should make sense. D mode usually shifts around 2-2.8k for me under light throttle. I shift earlier when I'm going for better mpg's.

ya i am presuming that is the reason. On manual mode, i shift around 1.8-2k rpm.. just wondering if doing the manual mode will damage the transmisson?

2k? Isn't that a bit low? I shift around 3.2-3.5 Feels more natural to me.

He has a diesel so 2k is just before the sweet spot on the torque curve and the best place to shift if looking for fuel economy.
