I just accepted a job in Boston, and don't know anything about living in the northeast. I have 19" wheels, full M-Tech kit, and RWD.

These might be stupid questions, but here we go:

- I'm guessing it's harder to sell a modded car in New England. Should I look into selling it while I am still in SoCal and then getting something else in Boston?

- If not, should I swap out my wheels for a smaller rim diameter? Will I be OK without AWD in the snow?

if i was you what i would do is get shitty rims that you dont care about getting salted up. then get a set of snow tires on there and just drive carefully. snow tires make an amazing difference but with that mtech kit i would advise you not go driving when we're getting 6+ inches of snow, just wait for the plows to take care of it first. as far as diameter, 18's or less probably because it might be hard finding snow tires in 19 inch.

The best option would be to get a dedicated 17" wheel set with blizzak lm-22s for winter. It's cheap and you won't run the risk of ruining your shiny 19" wheels. If you're lowered I would raise it back up for winter. But as far as it goes with driving in the winter with a rwd, you'll be fine with the right wheel/tire combo. Just don't drive like an asshat.

About selling a modified car in NE as oppose to SoCal, it's not as difficult as you would think. I sold my heavily modified g35 a couple years back and I had interest since day one.

I have a stock 330i with sport package but I don't drive it in the winter for two reasons:
1. Winter really beats up your car, salt, stone chips, etc...
2. Most people around here don't know how to drive in dry weather let alone snow, so I don't want to have to worry about getting hit.

I would say your best bet is to store your car in the winter and pickup a used 4X4. Maybe only drive the car on dry days.

Maybe an even better choice is to stay in CA where you don't have to worry about winter!

Wow I would say stay in SoCal. in all seriousness the Boston area is a great place to live just get used to your car being covered in sand and salt for about 4 months a year. With stockers and snow tires you'll be fine.

i would like to move from boston to so cal. dont get me wrong i do like it here but so cal. has the best weather in the country. as far as your car is concerned downtown boston will hurt your car if you drive there a lot. the suburbs aren't all that bad though. good luck.

The road conditions piss me off way more than the snow storms. Snow is inconvenient, and salt washes off. But, come springtime, even the major roads end up looking look like they've been carpet bombed by a B-52.

The first thing you need to know about the Northeast is that when it snows in Boston/Boston area - it becomes a clusterFK. Thats the truth, but seriously, its a great town.

I would look into selling the car in SOCAL. There is probably more of a market for modded RWD cars there. If you can get an e9x xi when you are here, you will have a much easier time 3-4 months out of the year with the snowfall. Plus, if you are a into snowsports, it will also help the cause. Plus you wont have to transport your car cross country

My buddies have repeatedly told me that driving a RWD bimmer in the snow is the worst. If you hold on to your car, you will make it, just not as easily. But just be sure to get some proper snow tires.

For me AWD is a must around here. Just my .02.

Its really not all that bad...and youll be fine with an i (do not sell your car)...some of these arguments dont make sense.

Even if it does snow hard lets say, youll only be out of commission for a day or so with the plows out. Not a problem.

You can get by with the i if you don't have to drive your car every day. However, I would still recommend investing in a set of snow tires. If you have a 335, the smallest you can go is 17" to clear the front brakes. I personally like the Dunlop M3 over the Bridgestone Blizzak LM25 (had both in the past). In the snow, it's really not about how you drive, because most people around here can't drive for shit in snow. You'd be at the mercy of other drivers on the road. Like others have stated, the pot hole problem is pretty bad in Boston, and I think the 'burbs are just as bad as the stupid downtown. My word of advice is to avoid Fenway Park like the plaque during ball game season.

If you can afford, get a Subie for the winter and save the Bimmer for summer.

If its financially feasable, If I were in your shoes, I'd take the excuse to get the 335xi. RWD is okay in the snow, but not if you NEED to get somewhere. xDrive is worth its weight in gold, especially when paired with proper winter tires.
One other thing, your car WILL get messed up. Driving in New England, you will never keep your car pristine, from all the salt, sand, and rocks flying out of the plow trucks way, there are gonna be marks and stuff. Low ground clearance, or fragile trim (M-Tech) doesn't help either, and find a good place to wash your car in the winter. Frequently.
Enjoy the move, Boston is a great city, keep the 19's for the summer, and watch out for the cop in the City Square Tunnel.
