ok so i joined this forum about 1 month ago.... I visit the site fairly frequently and it has just made me extremely paranoid about my car breaking down. I find myself constantly thinking let this not be the day that my car breaks down. Is it just me? I fixed the transmission pan and sleeve seal a couple of weeks back and now i am paranoid that its leaking again!
I dont know if i think this car is very unreliable or if this feeling comes from being on this site too much... what do you guys think?

also... does anybody have a 335i with more than 100000 miles... or know anyone... from what ive read in this forum i feel everything breaks down before than.... and everyone talks about selling their car before reaching this... coming from a 01 celica that had 180000 and never gave me one problem i feel like 100,000 is nothing...

Personally, My entire family owns BMWs and my father has one (stock its whole life mind you) and its 118k. Things break but remember, its always cheaper than buying a new car. His never had any major problems, except steering pump replacement, and HPFP, and water pump, nothing else crazy

Only those few with issues complain. Those who are going strong no matter what the mileage just enjoy their 335s. Relax and enjoy.

saw some guys on here with 120-130k mile 335i. Amazing is all I can say. As long as you take care of the car, the problems should be minor. Perform preventative maintenance. If something looks like it's about to fail, take it in to a shop and get it checked out.

I drove my 2007 E90 335i till 99,000 miles then sold it. The car ran strong with a tune on it the entire time I had it. I had plenty of parts replaced though just like any high mileage vehicle. I wouldn't worry about your car breaking down, drive it hard and how you want it and if it breaks down it breaks down. There's really no use in stressing over it, that's no fun.

"It's always cheaper..." The logic behind this is sound, however bmw and quite a few other luxury cars have $$$ bills compared to other "regular" type cars. Even maintenance is expensive. When the bmw breaks its going to cost a fortune, and it breaks often. this doesnt include the maint.

but dont be mislead thinking its cheaper to own a bmw then to buy a new car. FWIW, i sold my bmw for 20k bought a hyundai for 40k and financing 20k. i have a 10 yr warranty (extended). I was looking at 3000 worth of maint over the next 12 months, so this would knock the price down to 17k OOP. 17K for 10 years with almost nothing to pay for besides tires... I'll bite.

the twin turbo Straight 6 is a beast, with a "basic tune" its in the 4 sec range 0-60.

anyways feel the water over the next few years , dont fret over buying it !

thats how i felt after my serpentine belt snapped on the highway and got caught in my fan, and my car started over heating, i was scared to go on long road trips or drive it hard, but that was almost 7,000 miles ago, and i drive it HARD constantly, and no major problems. dont worry about it, its just a car, enjoy it while it lasts.

Every car has its failures so don't sweat it.

Like with me my coil pack went out went to the dealer bought a new coil pack replaced in under a hour and I was on my way.

Lease and enjoy a new car every 3 years, along with its warrenty. Your going to pay on a car one way or another over your lifetime. Its a depreciating assest. Drive what you want/can afford and look at it as an expense in life. Its a multi billion dollar business for a reason.

There's a mileage thread somewhere here where there are some 130k+ miles cars (If I'm not mistaken). It's a European car, take care of it and it will take car of you. I bought my car with 46k on the odometer and I plan to drive it past 100k.

Find a good indy shop and do good preventative maintenance. Enjoy the car. Make sure you get a tune :-)

While yes, buying a new Hyundai is cheaper than maintaining a BMW, but that is the literal expression of "Comparing Apples to Oranges." Its cheaper to maintain a BMW than to buy a NEW BMW <=== emphasis on the BMW part. Just like it will be cheaper to maintain your hyundai than to buy a new one.

I kinda wondered about the 100,000 mile fear because it seems like a consensus on here, yet I've seen numerous other sources that say modern cars should generally last 300,000 miles, even if made by GM/Ford/Chrysler. I figured it was just an excuse to get a new car and then get on the forums to brag about it.

The only concern you should have is that you will be ruined for other cars, even NA BMWs (Excluding M). My 2007 335i is my first BMW. When in for service my free loaner was usually at 328i. I could wait to get out of that and back into my car.

I do all of my own work now that it is out of warranty. It has 80K miles on it. Things I have done:

Cleaned intake valves (no parts) dealer would charge $850, indy around $400.

Alternator Pulley. Part was $80, 30 minutes in my garage

Battery. $219 for a battery from BMW, $80 for an indy shop to "register" it.

Tires. $850 for 4 mounted and balanced

Rear brakes: $365 for rear brake "kit special" from getbmwparts.com. Includes OE pads, rotors, sensor and paste.

The small % of people that have problems are the ones that make posts about them and give the impression that we all do. The other 90% of us that have no issues don't go making posts about the lack of problems we're having.

Don't let them scare you. All cars eventually need something fixed.

A lot of it is blown out of proportion too because people equate dealer charges with the actual cost to fix it. BMW charges a RIDICULOUS amount of money to do very simple things. If you're able to do your own work, I wouldn't sweat it at all.

The biggest expense I see people complaining about is the HPFP. It's a $300 part and takes under 3 hours to install in your own garage with regular tools. Many other parts are similar. The parts are not expensive, it's the ridiculous labor charges that BMW quotes (most of the time paid for by warranty, etc) that blows it out of proportion.

I spent more in maintenance on my S2000 than I did on my BMW, both with similar miles. S2000 needed a new clutch, BMW hasn't needed a thing except constant cleaning of my wheels because of brake dust I expect if the HPFP ever goes, I'll still spend less on that than the clutch on my S2000.

Mine is a 2011 335i x-drive with 44k km. To date, only issue has been broken oil cap when new causing smoking engine (changed under warranty and made them clean engine), and warranty upgrade of battery. Other than that, zero mechanical issue. I can live with those minor issues.
