DIY E9x sunglasses holder in place of roof handle on the cheap.

My 1st DIY so be gentle, especially as I've just spotted that BMW do one for 1 series

BMW have an optional sunglasses tray to replace the ash tray but you lose your 12v socket. I've been using roof mounted sunglasses holders made by Opel/Vauxhall and just found that it fits my E91 perfectly.

Basically all you need is a sunglasses holder from a 1995-2002 Vauxhall Vectra (or Opel Vectra depending on which country you're in). These are extremely cheap (£6.50, €7.74, $10.27 + postage), which means you can leave your ash tray & 12v socket alone. You could also have a spare for the passenger

Not meaning to plug, but you can buy them from a motor factor via the UK who seems as cheap as anyone selling them on Ebay (see http://www.lmfvauxhall.co.uk/Sunglas...er-SUN001.html).

I guess they timed out from the hosting site.
I lost the original photos, so I added a library photo of the holder that screws in place of the drivers grab handle.

Try these pics. Great for if you have a grey roof lining.

I purchased mine through roveractive. For $35 shipped, I could get genuine BMW ones that matches my interior's color. So you may want to do that too if you care about cosmetics.

But for the swap... You dont need a DIY for that! Come on.

But just in case :

1- Locate the two grab handles latches. There's a little cap that you can open with the tip of your nail. Open it.

2- In each of those two latches, there's two screws to unscrew with a T10 torx screwdriver.

3- The grab handle will then fall in your hands. You may want to keep em. Maybe not.

4- Take your glasses holder.

5- Open it.

6- Locate the same two latches.

7- Repeat step two; but screw instead of unscrewing.

8- Close the latches.

9- Repeat for passenger side.

10- Never break your glasses again.

Et voilà!

^ thanks for being a good sport, I was just messing with OP for posting "DIY" without a DIY.

Does anyone have any hints on how to get one (or two) of these in the USA?

I tried eBay (US) and didn't see any listings, and tried to order them from the parts shop mentioned by the OP and they must not like my $$$ as the website told me to phone or email them for special shipping requirements.

It doesn't look like there are any Opal parts suppliers locally (per Google), so I'm open for any ideas.

Try emailing LMF Vauxhall using the link in the 1st post as I've dealt with Steve many times as I used to own one. They will ship overseas, otherwise you have to find a local Opel parts dealer.

Email roveractive@verizon.net for genuine BMW parts. I paid $82.85 for two of those with international shipping.

I was going to say that you could get OEM BMW ones from the X1 for less than $40 shipped.

Yes, we did this mod some time ago using the new holder from the X1 - works great and much better than converting your ashtray to a sunglass holder that basically doesn't fit any sunglasses...

And, we DID get them for less than $40 shipped - but that was only during the Introductory Group Buy which is now over and the thread is closed.

Roveractive does still sell them on eBay but now the price is $56

Here is a link (this is for Grey, but they also have Black & Tan available):

Sounds like someone got a bit too "comfortable". The Vauxhall part costs less than $10 is appears to be very much the same thing, only without BMW name on it.

Now up to $66. Good grief. It's a regular cottage industry. Think I'll try to the Vauxhall part when we get our E90 in a few weeks.

I bought 2 of these parts - ~$32 USD shipped to USA from England. I highly recommend it as it works great. Nice way to stick it to the person robbing everyone for the version with the BMW name on it!
